Addendum VII.β (Year 832)
MS 3821.29 · Practices and doctrines
Scope
Addendum VII.β (Year 832) is a supplementary instrument appended to Clause VII of the Second Concordance, ratified in the winter of Year 832 of the Third Concordance's own reckoning, and catalogued since the Third Cataloguing Cycle under its present designation. It occupies forty-one lines of the Vellum Original and governs a single subject: the disposition of volumes whose shelfmarks were assigned before the shelf existed. The Addendum is frequently confused with Addendum VII of the Second Concordance, a separate and considerably shorter provision dealing with seal-wax composition, and the two are still occasionally misfiled together in the older stacks beneath the Provisional Shelving Annex B.Text and provenance
The Addendum was drafted by the Scriptorium of the Seventeenth Reach and entered into the record on 9 Frimaire, Year 832, after a dispute that had run, by the Scriptorium's own account, "longer than any of the parties to it could reasonably remember." It reads, in its operative clause:The original is filed alongside the Vellum Original of Clause VII, though the binding separating them has been resewn four times since the Year 4402 sealing, most recently under the direction of Keeper Anselm of the Ninth Reach. The Office of Precedential Determination, which has held the related indexing dispute of Addendum 3 since Year 431, declined jurisdiction over VII.β on the grounds that its numbering places it outside the Clause VII accretion entirely.Where a shelfmark precedes the shelf, the shelf shall be constructed to the mark and not the mark amended to the shelf; and where the shelf cannot be constructed, the volume shall be shelved at the mark regardless, and the absence noted in the margin.

The shelfmark question
The Addendum's practical consequence is the existence of approximately 1,900 volumes shelved in locations that do not exist, a category the Librarians term positional lacunae. Each such volume is recorded, in the Librarian Order's standing inventory, as "present and unavailable." Expeditions sent to retrieve them report that the volumes are indeed present — held, typically, by a reader who arrived before the shelving party — and that the reader is generally willing to hand them over once the shelfmark discrepancy is explained. A notable case is that of the 832-β acquisitions from the Warren of Ambiguous Fonts, which were assigned marks in a district whose construction was deferred under Concordance Addendum 404-β and then never resumed. The volumes have been moved eleven times. Each move generated a new inventory entry; none generated a shelf.Disputed readings
Three recensions of the Addendum survive, and they do not agree. The Scriptorium recension, held in the Seventeenth Reach, reads "the shelf shall be constructed to the mark." The Conciliar recension, filed with the Seventh Addendum to the Third Concordance, omits the semicolon in Clause 3 and reads, in consequence, as though the volume shall be shelved at the mark regardless of whether the shelf exists — a reading that has been cited in support of open-stack privileges on the Ninth Reach since Year 1104. The third recension, of uncertain date, is held in the Warren of Ambiguous Fonts itself and has never been successfully transcribed. It is shorter than the other two by a clause and is widely presumed to be the more accurate for that reason. The Commission for Archival Permanence has twice recommended that the discrepancy be resolved by constructing the shelves. Both recommendations were referred to the Acoustic Stewards, who hold that the ambient reading of a shelf that does not exist is materially different from the reading of one that does, and that the difference must be preserved.Notable incidents
In the winter of Year 832 — the Addendum's own year — a shelving clerk named Herwit of the Fourth Reach applied Clause 3 to a consignment of forty volumes and constructed forty miniature shelves, each 3.1 centimetres wide, at the exact points where the full shelves were to have stood. The shelves were later found to be load-bearing for a section of the corridor, and were removed in Year 845 with some difficulty. Herwit's marginal note, "built to mark as per 832-β," remains on the wall behind the present shelving and is legible under raking light. Visitors to the affected corridor are asked not to lean against the section marked in red chalk.Current status
The Addendum remains in force. It is cited, on average, forty times a year — most frequently in the autumn, when new acquisitions arrive with shelfmarks already assigned by the receiving office and the question of whether to amend the mark or build the shelf becomes, briefly, urgent. The Third Cataloguing Cycle lists it as "pending harmonisation," a status it has held since the Cycle's inception.See also
