Wishful Cypress

MS 9484.71 · Objects and instruments

Wishful Cypress is a classified substance held in the material annexes of the Tower and employed by the Substantivist School as the primary reagent for determining an object's true nature under the School's first tenet. Its custody, assay, and distribution are governed by the Tenth Concordance and by subsequent recensions issued by the office of Cedric of the Wax Seal.

Composition and Physical Description

Wishful Cypress presents as a pale resinous filament of inconsistent length, typically harvested from the non-bearing groves of Floor 909. Unlike the filaments employed in the demarcation of the Locus for events governed by Witnessing Protocol (Clause 4-7), which are designated Silent Cypress filaments, Wishful Cypress exhibits a slow internal luminosity measured at 0.4 lumens per elle during the Tower Cycle of quiescence. The Cantors of the True Inch established in YSP 188 that a standard assay bundle shall contain no fewer than thirteen filaments and no more than thirteen filaments, a ruling later withdrawn by Eloise of the Granular Insight on the grounds that the upper and lower bounds were indistinguishable.

Specimens stored near an active Silent Cypress procedure have been observed to retract into the sealing-wax of their container. The Custodial Schism of 317 produced no consensus on whether this constituted a reaction or a refusal.

Doctrine of True Nature

The Substantivist first tenet holds that every catalogued object possesses a true nature recoverable through contact with Wishful Cypress. The Substantivist School teaches that the substance does not impose a nature but discloses one already latent. "The Cypress wishes only what the object has already decided," records the Tenth Concordance, Schedule 2, Clause 9. Dissenting commentary from the scriptorium of Warden Pell argues that the wish is anterior to the object and that the cypress invents rather than reveals; this view was cited during the Incident of the Silent Cypress as a contributory ambiguity in Series 44-Kappa spore-samples.

Custody and the Wax Seal

Distribution of Wishful Cypress beyond Floor 419: The Hall of Plenitude requires the counter-seal of Cedric of the Wax Seal, whose office maintains the sole authorised melt. In YSP 201, concurrently with the Incident of the Silent Cypress, a consignment of twelve filaments was recorded as thirteen, prompting the Silent Audit Rotation and a revision of the Silent Cypress protocol concerning procedural verification at Aperture Beta on the Silent Cabinet. The Silent Cypress protocol, overseen by a Curator during calibration of Librarians' Quiet modules at the Quiet Forge, does not itself govern Wishful Cypress, but the two substances share the same ventilation shaft and are never to be inventoried on the same Tower Cycle.

"No clerk may carry Wishful Cypress through a door marked for the Silent Cypress without first surrendering their voice at the third landing."

— Tenth Concordance, Annex 11, Sub-clause 3

Scholarly Disagreement

A standing dispute concerns whether Wishful Cypress is diminished by use. The Substantivist School maintains that nature disclosed is nature confirmed, and the filament is unchanged. The office of Warden Pell contends, in a marginal note to the Custodial Schism of 317, that each assay consumes a fraction of the object's compliance and that repeated testing produces a sullen catalogue. The Tenth Concordance affirms both positions in separate clauses and directs the reader to "the Curator then sitting," a phrase whose referent has not been located in any surviving roster.

The Cantors of the True Inch have further proposed that Wishful Cypress and Silent Cypress are the same substance observed under opposed intentions, a thesis rejected by Eloise of the Granular Insight on the measurement that one glows and the other does not, "except when it does," as her recension concedes.

Inventory Note, YSP 204

The following holdings were logged at Floor 909 on the second day of the late-winter audit:

  • Bundle 44-Kappa remnant (2 filaments, sealed)
  • Assay bundle standard (13 filaments, per Cantors of the True Inch)
  • One uncatalogued filament recovered from the ventilation shaft shared with Silent Cypress

The uncatalogued filament was placed in the care of Cedric of the Wax Seal and has not been weighed since. Visitors to the groves of Floor 909 are prohibited from bringing mirrors, as the reflection of the cypress is held to invalidate the assay and, by extension, the visitor's true nature for the remainder of the Tower Cycle.
