Verity's Span
MS 8531.57 · Places and structures
Verity's Span is the official designation for a specific vaulted grotto located within the Western Saline Depths, Level 18-Alpha, as well as the ad hoc administrative district encompassing the immediate processing and habitation zones built around it. It is primarily noted as the sole source of the specialized vellum used for the original copies of the Third Concordance and is the site of a protracted procedural dispute regarding the measurement of apogeic spaces.
“The Span is not a place of consensus, but of calibration. Its height is measured not in meters, but in disagreements per carat.”
— From the dissenting opinion in In re: Standardization of the Implied Span, an appendix to the Calibrated Span dispute records.
Physical Characteristics
The grotto itself is a naturally occurring cavity within a halite formation, notable for its exceptionally flat, smooth ceiling. Its most cited physical metric is its apogeic height of 4.2 meters, a measurement certified by the Guild of Theoretical Mechanics in Cycle 12,401. The atmosphere within the Span is maintained at a constant 45% relative humidity and 12°C, conditions mandated by Annex V.7 for the aging of vellum stock. The walls exhibit a unique crystalline lattice pattern, believed to contribute to the structural integrity of parchment sourced from the site.
Primary Function: Vellum Production
Verity's Span serves a singular archival purpose. Per Concordance 3, Clause 19, the original vellum for any document requiring Verity Ink—most significantly the master copies of the Concordances themselves—must be prepared from the hide of a calf born, raised, and slaughtered within the boundaries of the grotto. The prescribed preparation ritual involves a 40-day brine cure using salts mined from the grotto's own walls, followed by a stretching and drying process conducted under the grotto's ceiling. The resulting substrate is uniquely receptive to the application of Verity Ink, forming the irreversible bond described in the Manifesto. A secondary, lesser-known use of the Span's byproduct salts is in the manufacture of Sleeping Ink, though this production is limited to a small annex under the oversight of Administrative Floor 44.
The "Span" Dispute
The name "Verity's Span" is the subject of ongoing bureaucratic contention. The "Span" originally referred to the 4.2-meter ceiling height. However, a faction within the Librarian Corps from the Calibrated Atrium argued that the term should also encompass the "implied span" between the grotto's official designation point and the Grand Atrium of Reference, a conceptual distance measured in procedural steps rather than physical distance. This dispute, while seemingly semantic, affects jurisdictional authority, resource allocation logs, and the certification chain for vellum batches. The matter remains technically unresolved, though for daily operations, the original physical definition is applied by convention.
Administrative Status
Governance of Verity's Span is hybrid. The vellum production protocol is under the direct authority of the Third Concordance's Curatorial Guild. The physical maintenance of the grotto and its atmospheric controls falls to the Salt Grottoes Stewardship. The habitation and support zones for the animal husbandry and tanning staff operate under a municipal charter granted by the nearest major administrative nexus, leading to a complex web of overlapping ordinances. Disputes are frequent and are typically adjudicated by citing whichever Concordant Law clause appears most favorable to the claimant, a practice that often leads to the invocation of Chamber 7,302 for reconciliation.
Notable Anomalies
Two anomalies are formally recorded in the Span's log. First, a persistent, low-frequency harmonic resonance can be detected in the grotto's northeast corner, measuring at 17 Hz. Its source is unknown, but it is credited by the local tanners with "improving the grain alignment" of the curing hides. Second, and more critically, the specific batch of vellum sourced for the original inscription of the Manifesto of Intrinsic Verity (Cycle 12,450) was noted by the scribe Arcadia as having "unexpected hygroscopic variance" in its margins. This variance is cited by some scholars as a material contributor to the Dilemma of Concurrent Verity, as the substrate may have influenced the ink's carbonization process in a non-standard way. A sealed sample of this batch is kept in the Chamber of Resonant Verity for study.
