Unbuilt Wing
MS 0198.20 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Unbuilt Wing is a provisional annex of the Tower, administratively subordinate to the Architect-Superior and formally designated for the cataloguing, containment, and procedural study of architectural concepts deemed structurally or ontologically incomplete. Its provisional status, codified in the Tract on Latent Administration, has persisted since 4,112 AR.
Location and Extent
The Wing occupies an indeterminate spatial volume between Floor 117 and the West Wing of Unstated Purposes. Its access points are not fixed; authorized personnel report using a system of "provisional doors" – architectural features that manifest only when carrying a valid Polian Gauge reading below the established threshold for material coherence. The interior geography is non-Euclidean and subject to frequent reconfiguration, a process overseen by the Office of the Architect-Superior (Vacant) during periods of vacancy. According to Concordance 44-A, the Wing "extends precisely as far as is necessary to contain its holdings, and not one pace farther."
Administration and Governance
Executive authority resides with the Architect-Superior, whose responsibilities include maintaining the Wing's material integrity and adjudicating disputes over an item's classification as "unbuilt." In practice, daily oversight often defaults to the Office of the Architect-Superior (Vacant), as the post has been unfilled for 73% of its recorded history. The Department of Applied Metaphysics provides consultative support on ontological stability, while the Guild of Theoretical Mechanics' Office of Unbuilt Forms handles the bureaucratic recognition of Theoretical Blueprints. All administrative actions must be sealed within Memory Caskets bearing the Architect-Superior's sigil to be considered binding.
Primary Holdings
The Wing's collections are organized by the degree and nature of their incompleteness. Major categories include:
- Theoretical Blueprints: Plans for towers, chambers, and stairways that defy conventional physics or logical consistency. These are granted legal standing equivalent to tangible artifacts under Guild statute.
- Negative Foundations: Records of structures defined entirely by what they are not (e.g., "The Staircase of Un-ascension").
- Half-Imagined Edifices: Buildings that were conceived but whose conception was abandoned mid-thought, resulting in spatially ambiguous forms.
- The Archive of Unfinished Sentences: A linguistic annex containing descriptions of rooms that lack predicates.
The most famous holding is the nexus of the Crisis of the Unbuilt Stair, an event precipitated by the attempted cataloguing of a staircase whose top and bottom steps were identical, creating a paradox of progression.
Scholarly Disputes
The Wing's very existence is a point of contention among Tower scholars. Concordance 29 upholds that "an unbuilt thing is no less real than a built one," mandating its cataloguing. However, findings presented during the Silent Wing Reconciliation directly challenged the Ninth Concordance's Axiom of Material Coherence, suggesting that unbuilt forms may possess a different order of reality altogether. A persistent minority view, articulated in several suppressed memoranda, argues that the Unbuilt Wing itself is an unbuilt concept, rendering its administration a form of infinite recursion. This is formally dismissed under Clause 12 of the Tract on Latent Administration, which states, "A bureau charged with managing the incomplete is, by necessity, complete in its function."
Procedural Protocols
All items entering the Wing undergo a stabilization ritual at the Metrology Alcove to determine their Polian Gauge rating. Items scoring between 0.7 and179; (the "Latent Band") are assigned a provisional shelf. Those scoring below 0.2 are considered "potentially volatile" and are stored in hermetically sealed Memory Caskets within a dedicated sub-wing. Access requires dual authorization from a sitting Librarian of the Chronometry Wing and a representative of the Architect-Superior's office. The protocol for de-accessioning an unbuilt concept – that is, deciding it has become built – has never been invoked and exists only as a theoretical appendix to the Tract.
