Theta Calipers

Definition and scope
Theta Calipers is a collective designation used in the Tower's registries for those measuring instruments whose manufacture, calibration, or decommissioning falls under the jurisdiction of Concordance Theta. The term is administrative rather than technical: it does not describe a single instrument class but rather a legal category, and instruments grouped under it — most prominently the Ambiguous Calipers — share no common construction, material, or principle of operation beyond the fact that Concordance Theta, Annex 7 has something to say about them.
The designation is occasionally shortened in shelf-marking to the bare letter theta, which has produced repeated confusion with instruments catalogued under Registry Theta-7 and with the holdings of Sector Theta itself. Readers are advised that a shelf mark reading "Theta" with no further qualification indicates a floor location, not an instrument type.
Etymology and legal basis
The term derives from the letter assigned to the Concordance governing calibration instruments in the Tower's original Concordance sorting, in which Theta occupied the eighth position of the governing sequence. The Tenth Concordance later assumed authority over the manufacture and decommissioning of the Ambiguous Calipers, creating an overlap that has never been cleanly resolved. Instruments manufactured before the Tenth Concordance's issuance remain technically Theta Calipers; instruments manufactured after are subject to both instruments, and the question of which citation prevails in a given workshop has been referred upward no fewer than eleven times.
The Twelfth Concordance complicated matters by legally authorizing the Moss Calipers and creating an exception for "tools measuring probable futures of certified flora" via Amendment Theta. Whether the Moss Calipers are therefore Theta Calipers is a matter of some dispute; the amendment's language grants them an exception from Theta jurisdiction without stating whether the exception is from the category or from the calibration requirement alone.
Instruments included
Under the broadest reading, advanced by the clerks of Registry Theta-7 and contested by the workshops of Ordinance Theta-4, the Theta Calipers include:
- the Ambiguous Calipers, in all four calibration states;
- the Moss Calipers, subject to Amendment Theta;
- the calibration masters referenced in Protocols for the Calibration of Ambiguous Calipers, which supersede all departmental or guild-specific calibration guides per Concordance Theta, Annex 7;
- retired and partially disassembled instruments held in the deep stores of Sector Theta, pending disposition under the Tenth Concordance.
The narrow reading excludes the Moss Calipers entirely and treats the calibration masters as implements rather than instruments. Neither reading accounts for the Spatio-Temporal Calipers, which appear in one Concordance Theta annex as falling under Theta jurisdiction and in a later recension as belonging to a separate schedule entirely.
Calibration
Calibration of Theta Calipers is governed by the Protocols for the Calibration of Ambiguous Calipers, which — per Concordance Theta, Annex 7 — supersede all departmental or guild-specific calibration guides. This clause has been the source of a long-running grievance with the Torque Calipers guild, whose own calibration manual predates the Protocols by several hundred floors and has never been formally repealed. The guild continues to apply its manual; the Protocols continue to supersede it; both are filed, and neither is read.
A practical note for visitors to calibration benches: the calibration master must be at rest for at least the time required to recite the annex before use, and instruments left unattended during a recalibration cycle will have been reclassified by the time the technician returns.
Scholarly disagreement
The principal dispute concerns whether "Theta Calipers" denotes instruments or jurisdictions. Under the first view, an instrument is a Theta Caliper by virtue of its construction and can be moved between floors without losing the designation. Under the second, an instrument is a Theta Caliper only while it stands on a shelf within Sector Theta, and removal to another floor terminates the classification. The second view is favored by the Librarians' inspectors, since it makes inventory reconciliation tractable; the first is favored by the workshops, since it preserves their exemption records.
The dispute was partially adjudicated during the winter of the long inventory, when Expeditionary Party Theta-9 returned from an external survey with eleven instruments, three of which had been assembled outside Sector Theta but calibrated within it. The report of that expedition, preserved among the holdings of Aural Conduit Theta-14, declines to state which of the three were Theta Calipers, noting only that "the instruments were received, the benches were warm, and the question was left open for a later assembly."
No later assembly has been convened.
