The Weaver's Loom
MS 9083.51 · Objects and instruments
The Weaver's Loom is a portable contraption of uncertain provenance, catalogued under Floor 412 as a non-fixed instrument for the interleaving of absent textiles with present archival matter. Unlike The Loom of Quietude, which is operated by Loom-Spinners for the weaving of quietude into a substantiative medium, The Weaver's Loom produces no silence and no silk, but rather a class of intermediary weave designated "half-present." Its custody has passed through no fewer than seven offices since its first recorded seizure by the Librarians in the winter of the 3,114th recension.
Description and Physical Register
The Weaver's Loom is described in the Floor 412 inventory as measuring 1.4 metres in height, 0.9 metres in breadth, and 0.6 metres in depth, with a frame of untreated cartographic ash and a shuttle carved from a single Spire-Weaver cocoon husk. It is fitted with three apertures marked α, β, and γ, through which researchers are instructed to insert pages bearing no content. The resulting weave, when examined under the lights of Floor 19, exhibits a faint resistance to being read, though it permits being catalogued. The Curators of the Loom have disputed whether the loom's output falls under their domain, noting in a ruling of the 3,201st recension that "the instrument mimics our charge without inhabiting its doctrine" (Curators of the Loom, Internal Minute 12).
History of Custody
The loom was first removed from an unattended alcove on Floor 2001 by a clerk of the Librarians named Tillen Apse, who recorded its seizure as necessitated by "a humming that cited no Concordance." It was transferred to Floor 412 in the 3,114th recension and thereafter lent, without formal warrant, to the Spire of Cartographic Echoes for a period of nineteen winters. A Folio-Weaver resident there is noted to have interleaved eleven of its non-existent pages into the expedition log, an act the Curators of the Loom later contested as infringing their oversight of interconnected narrative threads.
"The loom is not ours, is not theirs, and is not absent; it is the third category which the Second Concordance declines to name."
— Third Concordance, Annex 4
Following the return of the loom to Floor 412, the Curators of the Loom entered a protracted dispute with M. Selvage over whether its apertures constituted brass keys in potential; the matter was eventually cleared at the High Curators Spire but produced no amendment to the Fifth Concordance.
Doctrinal Disagreement
Scholars of the Tower remain divided on the loom's relation to substantive weaving. The Acoustic Weavers' Guild cites The Loom of Quietude as the sole doctrinal text concerning the ontology of silence and excludes The Weaver's Loom from that lineage. Conversely, a minority recension held by the scriptorium of Floor 91 argues that the loom is a degraded echo of the Spire-Weaver's own practice, pointing to the use of cocoon husk in its shuttle and the clarified resin tincture described in Spire-Weaver records. The Curators of the Loom have had disputes with the Curators of the Still on this point, the latter maintaining that any loom not still is the Still's concern by negation.
Operational Incidents
In the 3,388th recension a Loom-Spinners apprentice attempted to mount The Weaver's Loom beside The Loom of Quietude on Floor 45, resulting in a mutual cancellation of output that left both instruments recording only the date. The Librarians issued a sealed note prohibiting further co-placement, and appended to the Floor 45 register a clause forbidding the loom's use after the ninth bell. Visitors to Floor 412 may observe the loom but must not insert pages bearing handwriting, as the loom rejects authored matter and returns it scorched along the α aperture.
Current Status
The Weaver's Loom resides on Floor 412 under a custody order whose renewal is pending before the Curators of the Loom. A related question of the brass keys, contested by the Curators as belonging to the domain of Potential, remains unsettled per The Dispute of the Brass Keys. The Third Concordance affirms the loom's right to be catalogued; the Fifth Concordance omits it from the schedule of instruments, a contradiction neither office has moved to resolve.
