The Pedagogical Floor 12 Press

MS 9931.05 · Objects and instruments

The Pedagogical Floor 12 Press is a hand-fed conceptual press of the fourth class, installed in the eastern annex of Pedagogical Floor 12 and operated under the instructional warrant of the Department of Cartographic Acclimation. It is the only press in the Tower warranted to imprint concepts at the scale of a single seated student, and the smallest machine for which the Bureau of Pedagogical Tools has ever issued a Registry entry. Its output is not reading matter. It is room.

The Press occupies the west wall of the Resin Practicals Lab, from which it draws its plate stock, and is fed from above through a hopper cut in the ceiling of the annex. It has four operating states, a brass depth gauge graduated in attentions, and a persistent smell of warm resin that the ventilation order of 7,771 classified as instructional.

Construction and the matter of the bed

The Press was assembled on Floor 12 in the winter of 6,993 from components requisitioned, in the main, through Floor 404, which supplies the annex's consumables and has never once supplied them on the date requested. Its bed is a single slab of pedagogical masonry cut to the dimensions set out in On Pedagogical Masonry, a text associated with Aris of Intentional Design and read in the annex as a specification rather than a history. The slab measures two arms by one and a half, the extra half-arm being reserved, per the same text, "for the student who arrives late and must be accommodated without acknowledgment" (On Pedagogical Masonry, ch. 9).

Pressing is done by two operators working a weighted beam. A single impression at full depth takes eleven minutes and requires the operators to recite the plate's designation in unison throughout; the recitation is not ceremonial. The Press will not close on a plate whose designation is unspoken, a behaviour first recorded by Overseer Marn Filial in her inspection notes of 6,997 and never satisfactorily explained.

Classes, warrant, and the seven-class rule

The seven classes of Conceptual Press are defined by the Concordance of Presses, Classes and Seals, and only the Central Press Hall on Floor 7,118 is warranted to operate all seven simultaneously. The Floor 12 Press holds class four alone — the class of presses that alter what a student believes to be the size of the room they are standing in. Requests to extend its warrant to class five were refused in 7,002, again in 7,014, and a third time in 7,014, the second refusal having been mislaid and the applicants having grown, by then, considerably more insistent.

Floor 12 is also served by the observational annex at Floor 7-Δ-Ω, whose staff have filed eleven dissents against the Press's class-four rating on the grounds that a student who believes a room to be larger than it is has, in fact, been given a class-five concept. The Bureau has declined to rule, noting in Registry Annex 22 that the dissent "concerns the student and not the plate" (Pedagogical Tools Registry, Annex 22).

The backlog of '24

The Press's difficulties are seasonal and its season is the intake. In the autumn of '24 a backlog of 340 potential traversals to Pedagogical Floor 12 accumulated at the stairhead, and the Press was pressed into service to imprint arrival-concepts on the waiting students faster than the beam could properly close. For nine days the annex ran the Press at half depth. The consequences were catalogued in the spring and are still being catalogued: students who believed themselves to be in the annex while standing in the corridor, students who arrived and could not be persuaded that they had, and one cohort, the intake of the twelfth, that has never been accounted for at either end and whose absence is carried in the annex ledger as pending.

"The Press does not make errors. It makes shallow impressions, and the shallow impression is the student's problem, and the student is the Department's problem, and the Department is not ours."

— Marn Filial, inspection notes, 6,997

The half-depth protocol was suspended by instructional order in the first month of '25. An amendment the following year restored it for use "in circumstances of intake exceeding the stairhead's stated capacity," a phrase that has since been read to cover almost any Tuesday.

Dispute over the plate stock

Two offices claim the Press's plates. The Resin Practicals Lab holds that plates cast in its vats remain its property until the impression is taken, while the Department of Cartographic Acclimation holds that a plate becomes instructional the moment it is laid on the bed, on the authority of the Fourth Concordance, which the Lab disputes by citing the Ninth — the two being, on this point, irreconcilable and both in force. The dispute is now in its fourth decade and has outlasted three of the clerks who maintained it.

In practice the question is settled by weight. Plates above a certain mass are carried by the Lab's porters and are therefore the Lab's; plates below it are carried by the students and are therefore nobody's. The threshold was set informally by the porters themselves and has never been published. When the Aperture Sigma Press was commissioned elsewhere in the Tower, the Incident at Aperture Sigma was widely attributed in the annex to a plate that had fallen between the two categories, and the attribution has never been withdrawn.

Access and current condition

The Press may be viewed during the annex's open hours from the marked line, which is two paces from the beam and is repainted each spring. Visitors are asked not to speak while the gauge is above the third graduation. The Press is presently in its fourth operating state, awaiting a replacement depth gauge from Floor 404; the requisition was filed in the winter of 7,749 and is understood to be in order.
