The Lightwell Glosses

MS 7257.54 · Documents and ordinances

The Lightwell Glosses are a body of marginal annotations discovered upon the Miletus Fragment, rendered visible only through the interaction of Declination Light with that document within the West Lightwell. They are held to constitute a supplementary recension of certain archival protocols, though their authoritative status remains in dispute between the Third Concordance and the Sixth Concordance.

Discovery and Custody

The Glosses were first observed in Year 307 by Senior Lumener Alban, who recorded in his verification log that "the marginalia emerged only when the West Lightwell stood at 11.3 a.d. of declination, and faded upon its passing" (Senior Lumener Alban, Routine Verification Folio, Year 307). The volume containing the Miletus Fragment and its Glosses is housed within the West Helical Staircase, near the aperture designated West Lightwell. The Anonymous Scribe of the West Lightwell is held by the Provosts of Calibration to be the hand responsible, though no seal or signature survives. Alban of the Thirty-Sixth Landing later compiled the inventory of related holdings, and the Office of the Senior Undersecretary maintains the custody schedule.

Conditions of Legibility

Per Archive Designation Φ-7, the Glosses are rendered legible solely when illuminated by Declination Light refracted through the West Lightwell at a declination of 11.3 a.d. The Thirteenth Copy of the Miletus Diagram incorporates the full suite of marginalia, having been transcribed under the prescribed angle. The Commissioner for Harmonic Integrity ruled in Year 412 that "no copy lacking the refracted aperture alignment shall be counted among the true recensions" (Eleventh Concordance, Clause 9). A practical note: visitors may not lean against the West Lightwell casing, as the resulting vibration displaces the declination by approximately 0.4 a.d. and obscures the lower marginalia for the remainder of the hour.

Scholarly Disagreement

The Third Concordance asserts that the Glosses amend the foundational stack-order of the lower galleries, while the Sixth Concordance contends they pertain exclusively to the nomenclature of inert catalogue objects. The Ordinance Clarifiers observed in Year 388 that "the two Concordances cannot be reconciled without invalidating the seal of the Provosts of Calibration, a step for which no procedure is recorded" (Ordinance Clarifiers, Reckoning 12). Lira, a scribe of the Forty-Second Landing, argued that the Glosses describe a floor-numbering system superseded before the discovery itself, a position the Office of the Senior Undersecretary declined to adjudicate.

Recensions and Copies

Beyond the Thirteenth Copy of the Miletus Diagram, four subordinate recensions are catalogued: the Kells Transcript (attributed to Alban Kells), the Spiral Annex copy, the Provisional West copy, and the Sealed Dark copy, the last of which has not been opened since Year 334. The Anonymous Scribe of the West Lightwell is cited in all but the Sealed Dark copy as the originating annotator. Dispute arose in Year 451 when the Commissioner for Harmonic Integrity proposed withdrawing the Kells Transcript from circulation; the Provosts of Calibration refused on the ground that "withdrawal presupposes a summons, and none is extant" (Sixth Concordance, Annex 2).

Administrative Footnote

The Lightwell Glosses are counted among the permanent holdings of the West Helical Staircase and are not to be moved for verification elsewhere. The Senior Lumener Alban remains the nominal verifying officer, though the Office of the Senior Undersecretary notes that no verification has been filed since Year 388 owing to a lacking quorum of the Provosts of Calibration. The Eleventh Concordance reaffirms the 11.3 a.d. standard and instructs that "any observer reporting Glosses at other angles shall be recorded as having observed a reflection, not a recension" (Eleventh Concordance, Clause 4).
