The Equilibrium Calculus of Floor 9,007

MS 4652.40 · Places and structures

The Equilibrium Calculus of Floor 9,007 is the collective name for the sealed computation suite occupying the whole of Floor 9,007, Cell 14, and for the body of procedure governing it. It is not a calculus in the sense of Esoteric Calculus or the Ambient Calculus; no quantity has ever been computed by it. Its purpose is the maintenance of equilibrium in already-computed quantities, a function its custodians distinguish sharply from calculation proper and defend at length in the Eighty-Eighth Concordance.

Position and Access

Floor 9,007 is reached from the east stairwell by an unnumbered landing and a single iron door bearing the aperture mark α-9,007. The catalogue lists the floor as Equilibrium, suspended, and the qualifier is load-bearing: the floor may not be entered while any other computation is in progress anywhere in the Tower. In practice the door is opened on the first bell of each fourth morning and closed at the second bell, and the corridor outside is swept during the interval. The Office of Sidereal Equilibrium requested a standing exception for Orbital Calculus work in the winter of Year 41 of the Omicron Calendar; the request was granted, then revoked eleven days later on the ground that the exception itself had altered the equilibrium it was meant to preserve.

The Suspended Chalk

The suite's principal instrument is a single chalk line drawn across the chamber's north wall at a height of 2.4 metres by the clerk Adelard Voss in Year 19, and never renewed. It remains in place without support, dust, or discernible adhesion. Voss's working note, the only document in his hand that survives, records the line as a datum from which departures could be measured downward; he does not say from what, and the question has occupied the Panel of Logical Equilibrium for two centuries.

Visitors are asked not to look at the line for longer than the count of thirty. The rule is posted inside the door and is not explained.

"The line is level. All else is opinion."

— Concordance 88-Omega, Annex 4

The attribution is disputed. Concordance 91-Sigma assigns the same sentence to the surveyor Mirenne Tal, who is recorded as having visited the floor once and refused to return. The Panel of Logical Equilibrium has declined to resolve the matter, noting in its minute of 12 Florin, Year 88, that the two Concordances agree on the words and disagree only on who is owed for them.

Procedure of Counter-Weighing

The suite's operators — styled equilibrators, a grade neither clerical nor computational, created for the floor by Concordance 74-Theta — maintain the equilibrium of quantities computed elsewhere by the application of equal and opposite bookkeeping. A figure computed on Floor 71 and found to be drifting is entered in the ledger, and its exact negative is entered beside it. The pair is then struck through together. The original computation is unaffected; the ledger is understood to bear the strain.

The procedure works well until a quantity is negative at the outset, at which point its correction is positive and the ledger accumulates rather than discharges. Concordance 88-Omega, Clause 9, forbids the entry of such quantities altogether, which is why the floor holds no record of the debt crisis of Year 63 despite having caused it. The Bureau of Luminous Equilibrium filed a formal objection in that year, observing that the same difficulty arises in the balancing of Luminous Lichen schedules and that the Bureau had solved it by not permitting negative light. The objection was upheld in part and the equilibrators were instructed to file a note whenever they declined an entry. They have filed 4,112 notes. None state a reason.

Dispute: The Floor or the Calculus

Scholars divide on whether the Equilibrium Calculus is the procedure or the room. The Panel of Logical Equilibrium holds the latter: the chalk, the door, and the sweep of the corridor are integral to the operation, and the procedure cannot be performed elsewhere, a position set out in its ruling of Year 90 and consistent with Concordance 91-Sigma, Annex 2. The Guild of Quantitative Idealists holds the former, and has twice attempted to reproduce the suite in a hired chamber on Floor 4,012, arguing that a method is portable by definition. Both attempts produced ledgers that balanced on the first day and would not balance again. The Guild's account of this failure — that the hired chamber faced west — has not been accepted by the Panel.

A third position, advanced by the Office of Luminous Equilibrium and supported by Concordance 103-Chi, is that the floor and the procedure are distinct and that the distinction is itself the subject of the article. No member of that Office has been able to say what the article would then contain.

Recorded Incidents

  • Year 22: the chalk line was found to have moved 3 mm south. It was moved back by an equilibrator whose name the register omits, and the register page for the day is blank.
  • Year 47: a resonance matching the low-frequency harmonic recorded near Shelf α-12 on Floor 71, The Calculus of Regret was detected in the suite for nine minutes. The Chime of Contested Harmony was rung from Floor 8,900 as a precaution and not answered.
  • Year 63: the ledger bore a strain of 14,000 struck-through entries before the objection of the Bureau of Luminous Equilibrium was upheld.
  • Year 88: a visiting clerk from Beta looked at the line for the count of thirty-one and was escorted out. He reported no ill effect.

Current Standing

The suite remains in operation under Concordance 117-Upsilon, which restates the founding prohibition, renews the fourth-morning schedule, and adds a clause requiring that the corridor be swept before the door is opened rather than during the interval. The equilibrators have appealed the change on the ground that sweeping before opening alters the dust. The appeal is pending before the Office of Sidereal Equilibrium, which is under the authority of the Panel of Logical Equilibrium and which has, for reasons of its own, asked that the matter be heard on Floor 9,007.
