Temporal Gaps
MS 2836.13 · Practices and doctrines
The classification known as Temporal Gaps (officially Lacunae Tempus) refers to formally sanctioned discontinuities within chronological records, temporal streams, or causal sequences, where the absence of documentation or phenomena is itself a documented and verifiable fact. Governed by Section 12 of the Proviso on Permissible Incompleteness, Temporal Gaps are distinct from simple lapses in record-keeping; they represent structured voids where time is acknowledged to have passed, or events to have occurred, but for which no substantive data exists, can exist, or is permitted to exist. The recognition and maintenance of such gaps fall under the purview of the Subbureau of Temporal Reconciliation.
Classification and Typology
Temporal Gaps are categorized by both origin and ontological status. The primary typology, as outlined in Annex Delta of the Seventh Concordance, distinguishes three core types:
- Deliberative Gaps: Intentional omissions mandated by Concordance, often to sever a causal chain deemed hazardous or recursively paradoxical. The fifty-three-year silence surrounding the events of Floor Ξ-7’s “Chronostasis Episode” is a canonical example.
- Consequential Gaps: Absences arising from a documented event that effectively consumes or negates its own temporal footprint. These are validated through retroactive void-measurement using instruments like the Void Calipers.
- Structural Gaps: Intrinsic lacunae within the Tower’s own temporal architecture, analogous to Spatial-Topological Gaps but applied to chronology. These are often identified by the Bureau of Spatial and Temporal Alignment during routine Temporal Cartography surveys.
A secondary, more contentious classification system proposed by the Verdant Stair Cartel further subdivides gaps by perceived “texture”—whether they are smooth (seamlessly integrated), ragged (causally disruptive), or resonant (emitting chronal feedback)—though this schema has not been adopted into any formal Concordance.
Verification and Registration
The process for certifying a Temporal Gap is rigorous. A petition must be filed with the Subbureau of Temporal Reconciliation, accompanied by a Temporal Void Affidavit and readings from no fewer than three certified Temporal Gauges. The bureau then cross-references the proposed gap against the Master Index of Non-Sequential Gaps to ensure it does not improperly overlap with an existing Taxonomic Gap or a holding on the Register of Self-Sustaining Gaps. Only upon confirmation of unique, non-disruptive absence is a Gap Designation Number (GDN) issued and the void entered into the Chronological Lacunae Register.
“A gap is not an error; it is a feature of a complete record. To document nothing is still an act of documentation.” — Archivist-Superior Lin, On the Ethics of Absence, Spiral 892.
Doctrinal Disputes
The most significant scholarly controversy concerns the “potency” of a Temporal Gap. The Traditionalist school, led by the Bureau of Alignment, holds that a gap is purely informational—a missing page in a ledger. The Emergent school, based largely on Floor Δ-44, argues that certain Consequential Gaps develop a quasi-causal agency, exerting “chronal suction” on adjacent events and potentially generating new phenomena ex vacuo. This debate was intensified by the incident surrounding Clause 7.1.5, where a minor gap in procedural documentation was later found to have spontaneously generated seventeen separate, contradictory memoranda over a period of two centuries.
Furthermore, the principle of Temporal Subordination is often invoked in disputes: if a higher-order temporal structure (e.g., a floor's master timeline) contains a gap, must all subordinate personal chronologies within it also reflect that absence? The Concordances offer conflicting guidance, leading to frequent appeals to the Librarians for arbitration.
Operational Impacts
The management of Temporal Gaps has profound practical implications. Transit Manifests moving through a gapped region must be stamped with a GDN to maintain the chain of custody. Historical research proposals that would intersect a Deliberative Gap are automatically rejected. Perhaps most critically, the calibration of all chronometric devices within a five-spiral radius of a registered Structural Gap requires adjustment for “void-drag,” a correction factor published quarterly by the Subbureau.
Failure to properly acknowledge a Temporal Gap can result in severe Temporal Dissonance for personnel and the mis-shelving of holdings into “phantom temporalities,” a logistical nightmare remedied only by costly Reconciliation Audits.
Notable Examples
- The Great Silent Resonance (GDN Ξ-002)
- A Structural Gap spanning an estimated 200 subjective years within Spiral 303, discovered when an entire survey team returned insisting only three hours had passed. The gap led to the rewriting of seven statutes concerning temporal hazard pay.
- The Librarian’s Pause (GDN Δ-117)
- A Deliberative Gap enacted following the unshelving of the Codex of Immediate Consequences on Floor Ω-1. All records from the subsequent 24-hour period were expunged by order of the Librarians themselves, establishing the precedent that their authority can create gaps immune to standard audit.
- The Fading of the Cerulean Stair (GDN Σ-455)
- A Consequential Gap where a collapsing temporal manifold erased not only the stairwell’s history but the very possibility of its having been constructed. It persists only as a cross-referenced absence in architectural scrolls and is listed as a prime site for Void Calipers training exercises.
