Scriptorium of the Unwritten Preface
MS 0667.23 · Places and structures
The Scriptorium of the Unwritten Preface is a drafting hall on Floor 14,208, chartered for the composition of prefaces to works that have not yet been begun, abandoned, or ruled out. It is the only scriptorium in the Tower whose output is, by definition, always in advance of its subject. The hall occupies the whole of the eastern spur of Floor 14,208 and is entered, per a notice fixed to the outer door in 11 Felting, without hats.
Unlike the Vault of Unwritten Prefaces, which sequesters completed works that could not be prefaced and holds them in perpetuity, the Scriptorium works in the opposite direction: it produces prefaces first, supplying a work with its apparatus of address before that work has any claim on the shelves. The distinction is set out at length in the Preface to the Manual of Scriptorial Protocol, preserved in the Central Scriptorium, which describes the hall as "a place where the cart is permitted to precede the horse, provided the cart is sealed."
Charter and method
The Scriptorium was chartered under Annex 6 of The Unwritten Concordance, which delegates to the hall the drafting of all prefaces to works not yet extant within the Tower. Its drafts are inscribed on certified Unwritten Pages by Librarians of the Unwritten, who alone may distinguish a page that is blank from a page that is unwritten. The distinction is not cosmetic. A page mistakenly taken for unwritten when it is merely blank will accept a preface; a page that is genuinely unwritten will accept one only if the preface is completed before the work it introduces is conceived, and the certification of that sequence is the principal labour of the hall.
Each preface is drafted in recension — that is, at least twice, and the second recension must not be permitted to read the first. In practice this is achieved by assigning the two drafts to separate desks and forbidding conversation between them until both are sealed. Discrepancies between recensions are not reconciled; both are retained, and the work, when it eventually arrives, is issued with whichever recension its custodian opens first.
The Gilded Quandary and the Terce Dispute
The hall's history is dominated by its long quarrel with the Archive of Withdrawn Prefaces over the condition named Gilded Quandary, in which a preface outlives its work and cannot be demoted because there is nothing beneath it. The Archive maintains that a Gilded Quandary preface belongs with the withdrawn, since it no longer precedes anything; the Scriptorium maintains that a preface without a work is not withdrawn but uncommenced, and belongs where it can still be joined to a future text. The dispute is procedural rather than angry, and has been conducted by memorandum since 4 Felting.
A third party entered in that year. The Bureau of Accord, acting on Clause 22 of the Preface to the Eighth Concordance, ruled that no anomaly shall be left unresolved and no silence unattended. The Chamber of Unwritten Precedents read the ruling as reaching Gilded Quandary prefaces and requisitioned eleven of them in 5 Felting for use as precedents. The Scriptorium protested that its drafts were not precedents but overtures. The Chamber replied, in an annex now bound into its own register, that it had waited three recensions for a distinction and had proceeded without one.
"The Scriptorium asserts that its drafts precede nothing and therefore cannot bind. We observe that it has asserted this in triplicate, under seal, and filed it."

Incident of the Tenth Desk
On 12 Felting, the hall's then-keeper, a clerk named Verrin Ost, drafted a preface for a work he declined to name, sealed both recensions, and filed them in the work-order cabinet. No work was ever designated. The preface remained on the open register until it was discovered by auditors from the Secretariat for Unwritten Protocols that it had begun to attract other prefaces, six by the end of the season, each written to introduce the one before it. The auditors classified the accumulation as an uncontrolled Accretion of the Unwritten, one of the conditions named in The Precept of Unwritten Catalogues, and remanded the whole sequence to the Vault of Unwritten Prefaces on Floor 6,441, where it remains. Ost was not censured. He had, the auditors noted, followed the parchment rule exactly.
The event is cited in the hall's standing instruction to keep a work-order designation on the register before the first recension is begun, and in no other context. Ost's preface is not readable to visitors. The accretion makes a sound like a page turning when the cabinet is opened, and the cabinet is therefore opened at appointed hours only.
Inadmissible Absences and the dust of Floor 14,208
The Scriptorium is not troubled by the dust that affects the West Scriptorium of The Implied Preface, which is attributed to The Unwritten Volume of the Codex of Perpetual Motes. The eastern spur is kept swept on alternate days. It is, however, kept in the shadow of the Intentionalist School, headquartered two wings away on the same floor, whose scholars argue that a preface's meaning is fixed by the intention of the work it addresses — an intention which, at the Scriptorium, does not yet exist. The School has been invited four times to state where its doctrine leaves the hall's drafts. It has twice sent regrets, once sent an observer, and once sent a note reading simply that the question was premature, which the Scriptorium has filed under correspondence and does not cite.
Holdings and access
The hall's holdings are inventoried at the close of each recension and consist, at last count, of the following:
- Two thousand and forty sealed prefaces, subject unassigned;
- Eleven prefaces on deposit with the Chamber of Unwritten Precedents;
- One accretion, remanded, awaiting nothing;
- Seven blank pages certified unwritten, kept flat;
- One register, in continuous use since 4 Felting.
Consultation of the open register is permitted to Librarians of the Unwritten and to scholars bearing a letter from the Archive of Withdrawn Prefaces. A sealed preface may be opened only by the custodian of the work it was written for, and where no such custodian exists, by no one. The hall closes at the twentieth bell and does not reopen during the Hush of the Seventh Preface, when the shearing parties occupy the eastern stairs and there is no quiet in which to draft.
