School of Definitive Negation
MS 0291.63 · Guilds, orders and offices
Definition and scope
The School of Definitive Negation is a faction within Codicological Negation holding that a negation, once correctly recorded, ceases to be revisable. Where the School of Qualitive Negation treats the catalogued absence as accruing quality through its entry, the School of Definitive Negation maintains that the entry exhausts the matter: the absence has been stated in its final form, and any subsequent amendment is a defect in the archive rather than a development of the subject. The School is small, older than its prominence suggests, and has been described in the Second Concordance as "an office that has mistaken its own signature for the thing signed."
Its practitioners are commonly called Definitivists, though they refer to themselves as the Closed Table. The School holds its sittings on Floor 2,116, in a scriptorium whose doors are barred from the inside during session, a rule adopted after the incident of the Twelfth Entry (see below).
Historical formation
The School emerged from a dispute over the transcription of the Marginalia on Polian Negation. The School of Particulars had produced what it regarded as a provisional rendering; the Definitivists argued that a transcription of a negation is either correct or not, and that the habit of issuing revisable copies was the source of the archive's chronic contradiction problem. Their founding memorandum, the Closure of the Table (undated, but internal references place it before the Fourth Concordance), asserts that "a record amended is a record that has confessed to having been wrong, and no clerk of this Table will make such a confession on behalf of an absence."
The School's early strength derived from its control of the seal-room attached to the documentation phase, where entries were physically stamped as closed. For several recensions, a Definitivist seal was sufficient to prevent amendment without a ruling from the Librarians themselves. This prerogative was curtailed by Concordance 11, clause 6, which reasserted the general amendability of all records — a ruling the School continues to observe in writing while disputing it in practice.
Relation to the Fading Theorem
The School's most visible disagreement with the mainstream is its reading of the Fading Theorem of Reciprocal Negation. The orthodox position, formalized by the School of Qualitive Negation in SP 127, holds that reciprocal negations decay in force over successive citations. The Definitivists accept the theorem's mathematics but deny its consequence: they argue that a negation whose force has faded still occupies the entry it was given, and that the entry does not fade with it. On this point they are in direct correspondence with the substantivists, and the two groups share a reading room.
The dissenting faction around Sub-Archivist Kael, which argues for a Negation of Negation, is regarded by the Closed Table as the more dangerous error, precisely because it proposes to reopen what the School considers settled. Kael's followers have responded that the School of Definitive Negation "is a school of bookkeeping that has mistaken itself for a school of thought," a characterization the Definitivists decline to answer on the grounds that the remark itself is not yet closed.
The Twelfth Entry
In the winter of the registry shortfall, a junior clerk of the School discovered that the twelfth entry in a bound sequence of closed negations had been altered after sealing — the handwriting of a marginal hand being distinguishable under raking light. The School's response was not to reopen the volume but to withdraw it entirely, on the grounds that a volume containing an amendment is no longer a volume of closed records and must therefore be reclassified as loose paper. The clerk who discovered the alteration, Verent Hask, was reassigned to the Annex of Luminous Negation and is not recorded as having returned.
Visitors to Floor 2,116 are reminded that the barred doors are a feature of session and not a safety measure, and that no request for admission made during a session will be recorded.
Standing within the archive
The School's current status is provisional. The Provisional Protocol Summary lists it as "an interpretative tendency with administrative residue," a phrase that preserves the seal-room question without resolving it. Its alliance of convenience with the substantivists and its quiet resistance to Concordance 11 leave it positioned between the mainstream of Codicological Negation and the more radical apophatic currents — a position it shows no signs of vacating, on the stated ground that positions are not to be vacated once taken.
Whether the School's central thesis — that a negation can be definitively stated — is compatible with Spherical Negation remains an open question, deferred indefinitely by mutual agreement of the parties.
