Persistent Hum of Aisle Gamma

MS 6766.29 · Practices and doctrines

Persistent Hum of Aisle Gamma is the standing low-frequency resonance attributed to Aisle Gamma-7 and the adjoining spirals, first logged by the Scriptorium of Floor 18 in the winter of the 2,114th Index Year and thereafter entered among the holdings of Persistent Hum. Unlike the localized episode recorded at The Sub-Audible Hum at Aperture 77-Gamma, the Persistent Hum of Aisle Gamma is held to be continuous, though its continuity has itself become a matter of recension.

Geographic Extent

The Hum is described in the Witness Ledger 44-Gamma as audible from the western bound of Aisle Gamma-7 to the eastern terminus at Spiral 719-Gamma, with a secondary report placing a fainter band at Spiral 77, Aperture Gamma. The Fourth Concordance states that Spiral 44-Gamma is coterminous with the eastern terminus of Aisle Gamma-7, a claim disputed by the Acoustic Compliance Bureau, which in Auditory Annex 12-B fixes the eastern bound three apertures nearer the core. The discrepancy has never been reconciled, and the Hum is accordingly charted with a broken border on the 9th Recension of the floor plan.

Classification and Criteria

Under Directive 14,899-δ (Framework for Cataloguing Persistent Referential Gaps), the Hum was entered as a referential gap in the auditory register. The Manual of Unresolved Phenomena supplies three criteria for such a hum: first, that no machinery be present; second, that the resonance persist beyond fourteen days; third, that at least two separate scriptoria record it without prior arrangement. The Hum satisfied all three by the 44th day of the 2,114th Index Year, though the Office of the Lean argued that the leaning column addressed in In re: The Leaning Pillar of Aisle Gamma-7 constituted machinery within the meaning of the first criterion, a position rejected by Senior Lumener Alban on the ground that "a pillar repaired without a prior filed intent remains, for all administrative purposes, broken" (In re: The Leaning Pillar of Aisle Gamma-7, Condition of Recorded Disrepair).

Scholarly Disagreement

A standing dispute concerns whether the Hum is identical to The Hum of Absent Machinery, an entity for which Directive 14,899-δ also provides a framework. The Substrate Scholiasts maintain that the two are one, citing the shared frequency band of 8 Hz to 22 Hz observed during The Gamma Aperture Incident. The Separatist Cantors of Aisle Ω hold otherwise, noting that The Hum of Continuity was absent from Aisle Gamma during the same period and that Gamma Point Static showed no correlated drift. The Third Concordance avoids the question; the Fourth Concordance implies identity without stating it. No ruling has issued.

"The Hum of Aisle Gamma is not a sound but a tax on silence, levied by the shelves themselves."

— Junior Clerk Veth of the Silent Scribes of Aisle 7000, marginal note to Witness Ledger 44-Gamma

Administrative Consequences

The persistence of the Hum altered the shelving taxonomy of Aisle Gamma-7 on three occasions, each corresponding to a shift in the resonance's centre frequency. The Office of Concordance Amendments filed fourteen revisions to local inventory in the 2,115th Index Year alone. Visitors to the aisle are permitted to hum in response only on alternate Thursdays, and only below 10 Hz, a restriction inscribed on the doorplate by order of the The Aisle of Ambiguous Prepositions sub-committee and never subsequently repealed.

Related Held Phenomena

The Hum is cross-referenced in the archive with Hum, The Substrate Hum, Memorial Resonance, The Perpetual Aisle, The Hum of Continuity Document, The Aisle of Dropped Letters, and Spiral 7-Gamma. The The Aisle of Ambiguous Prepositions retains a sealed commentary asserting that the Hum originates at The Gamma Aperture Incident and terminates at Aisle Ω, a claim the Scriptorium of Floor 18 has neither confirmed nor catalogued.
