PD-H-712.43 paradox
MS 8818.24 · Practices and doctrines
PD-H-712.43 paradox is a Paradox Designation of the Paradox Control Bureau, recorded in the Paradox Designations register as a containment-class event concerning the horizontal inversion of numbered floors within the upper spiral of The Tower. The designation was first ratified by a certified Paradox Warden in the winter of 644 A.T. following the unexplained appearance of Floor 712 beneath Floor 43, an arrangement that persisted for eleven days before partial recension by the Paradox Contamination Type VII-C office.
Origination and First Observation
The PD-H-712.43 paradox was initially logged by Clerk Orrin Vast of the School of Applied Paradox, who noted in his personal scriptorium ledger that "the stair from 43 descends not to 44 but to 712, and the seal upon the door is warm to the touch" (Orrin Vast, Margin Note 9, 644 A.T.). The Paradox Control Bureau contends that all significant conceptual leaks are paradox-adjacent, and accordingly classified the event under Type VII-C practice within three hours of the ledger's submission. A Paradox Warden proposed the formal designation on the authority granted under Paradox Mitigation, and the Paradox Anchor at Spiral Junction was rotated by 0.4 degrees to arrest further inversion.
Containment Procedure and the Harness Dispute
Standard response to PD-H-712.43 relied upon the Paradox Mitigation Harness, worn by attendants tasked with walking the inverted interval. The Department of Historiographical Paradox later disputed whether the harness was ever effective, citing a recension in which Floor 712 reappeared above Floor 43 during the 651 A.T. audit. The Bureau of Historical Paradox entered a concordant note that "no floor herein described has ever been sequential, and the dispute rests upon a category error of order" (Third Concordance, Annex 4). Nevertheless, the Paradox Wardens ratified the entry in the Principal Register of Designations and maintained the harness protocol through the seventh recension.
"The Harness does not prevent the inversion; it merely ensures the clerk recalls which way was up before the walk."

Scholarly Disagreement on Class Standing
The Paradox of the Unwritten Beast is classified by the Paradox Control Bureau as a Class-5 Paradox Contamination event, whereas PD-H-712.43 is held by the same office to be a Class-3 sub-event of Type VII-C. The Department of Historiographical Paradox rejects this, arguing in its 688 A.T. brief that the inversion is in fact a manifestation of the Kairological Paradox, in which measured time on Floor 712 ran backward relative to Floor 43. The School of Applied Paradox formally articulated the Paradox of Self-Application, and some scriptoria hold that PD-H-712.43 applies itself to its own designation number, producing the The Autocitational Paradox whenever the code PD-H-712.43 is spoken on the floor it names. A Metacitational Override was issued by a Paradox Warden to contain that secondary effect in 690 A.T.
The Verified Holding Incident
In 702 A.T., a subordinate office attempted to file PD-H-712.43 within The Paradox of the Verified Holding, asserting that the inversion had been conclusively resolved and therefore no longer existed. The Paradox Control Bureau rejected the filing, noting that "a paradox verified as concluded is not a holding but a closure, and closures are not catalogued" (Paradox Contamination Type Vii C Practice, Clause 12). The attempt was later cited by the Paradox Wardens as reason to decommission the Paradox Mender function in 701 A.T., an action recorded without dissent in the annex of the same year.
Current Status and Visiting Note
As of the ninth recension, PD-H-712.43 remains an active designation. Floor 712 is presently situated beneath Floor 43 only on the second Tuesday of each Tower-month, and the Paradox Anchor at Spiral Junction is inspected quarterly by the Paradox Control Bureau. Visitors to the interval are prohibited from carrying written numerals exceeding two digits, as the presence of "712" or "43" on paper has been observed to accelerate the inversion by up to six minutes. The Paradox Control Bureau dissolved the School of Applied Paradox in 709 A.T., though its marginalia on PD-H-712.43 remain the primary source for the event's early history.
