Oral-Aural Component
MS 5132.88 · Practices and doctrines
Oral-Aural Component is the mandatory spoken-and-heard element by which chain continuity is established and verified across the floors of the Tower. It is the practical expression of the Doctrine of Unilineal Descent, requiring that certain transmissions of record be performed aloud in the presence of a witness rather than committed solely to script. The Office of Conduit Verification administers the oral portion of the Aural Conduit Theta-14 examination, and the component's calibration is disputed in no fewer than eleven recensions of the Fourth Concordance.
Origins and Doctrinal Basis
The Oral-Aural Component arose from the Doctrine of Unilineal Descent, which underlies the requirement for an oral-aural element in all matters of chain continuity. Prior to the Sigma Amendments, the component could be discharged by silent mouthing before a sealed lens; the Amendments, enacted between Cycles 4,899 and 4,901, revised the Practice to improve practical enforcement by requiring oral-aural components to be performed aloud in the presence of a witness. The Subcommittee for Aural Anomalies thereafter drafted Concordance 892, which defined the minimum intelligibility threshold as "that spoken form which a witness of the third aperture may repeat without recourse to the original leaf."
A scholarly disagreement persists as to whether the witness must share the speaker's floor. The Committee for Aural Integrity holds that cross-floor witnessing violates the Silent Precedents; the Curators of Lacunae counter that the Aural Lacunae Archive on Floor 9090 routinely accepts testimonies relayed through the Stanton Aural Grid. No ruling has reconciled the two positions.
Administration and Examination
The Office of Conduit Verification conducts the oral portion of each Aural Conduit Theta-14 assessment in the Aural Atrium, a waystation established during the Aural Lattice Initiative. Candidates recite the Verbal Exactitude canticle while a calibrated unit records diffraction. The Aural Diffraction Scanner (SMP-Δ) determines whether the emitted signature matches the candidate's deposited sonic footprint, as derived from the Stanton Aural Grid during the Aural Lattice Initiative.
"No component shall be adjudged complete wherein the spoken passage falls below the threshold of the witness's, irrespective of the scribe's marginal note."
— Concordance 892, Annex 2, Clause 7
In Cycle 5,012, a clerk of the Office of Conduit Verification named Pell Auxet was recorded satisfying the component by whispering to the Great Bell of the Great Clock during its resting hour; the Committee for Aural Integrity annulled the attempt on the ground that the Bell was not a witness but an object, though the Subcommittee for Aural Anomalies noted the Bell "hears by charter."
Instruments and Field Deployment
During the Aural Lattice Initiative, the Aural Conduit Theta-14 units were utilized for field operations on Floor 4044, where the Oral-Aural Component was tested against ambient resonance. The Stanton Aural Grid, a permanent installation of 1,244 omnidirectional contact microphones, integrated with the Aural Lacunae Archive to triangulate sonic footprints for acoustic cartography. The SSMP-7 device was prohibited from use in these tests, as its output was held by the Index of Sustained Resonances to mask the spoken word.
The Aural Dampeners, under jurisdiction of the Committee for Aural Integrity, must be disengaged for the duration of any component performance; Concordance 64, Annex 9, imposes a fine of three sealed leaves upon any Librarian who fails to post the dampener-disengagement placard.
Contradictions Among the Concordances
The Concordance 64 states that the component may be satisfied by a single witness of any rank, while Concordance 892 requires two witnesses if the speaker is attached to the Curators of Lacunae. The Sigma Amendments implicitly invalidate the single-witness provision but do not name it, producing a condition the Subcommittee for Aural Anomalies terms "the unstated repeal." Clerks on Floor 717 have adopted the practice of witnessing their own components in a mirrored alcove, a custom the Office of Conduit Verification neither endorses nor has stricken from the record.
Maintenance and Visiting Note
The Aural Atrium closes to petitioners on the second dusk of each Cycle for the re-stringing of the testimony looms; during this interval the Oral-Aural Component may not be lawfully performed, and any recording made is deposited unheard into the Aural Lacunae Archive.
A visitor attempting to observe a component performance must wear slippers of unbound felt, as the Committee for Aural Integrity has determined that trodden leather produces a sonic footprint indistinguishable from a false oath.
