Kaelen of the Parallel Stacks
MS 8874.38 · Persons
Kaelen of the Parallel Stacks (fl. Year 703–731) was a Scribe-Taxonomist of Floor 47β, remembered chiefly as the author of the Provisional Framework for Disambiguation and as the half-ungrieved party in the Kaelen Filing Controversy. His career turned on a single proposition: that a thing may be catalogued in more than one place at once, provided the places are registered as parallel and neither is permitted to know of the other.
He is not to be confused with Librarian-Archivist Kaelen, Kaelen of the Subscript, Kaelen of the Seventh Verge, nor any of the eleven other Kaelens whose holdings remain in dispute before the Office of Parallel Acquisitions. Kaelen himself insisted on the distinction in a memorandum of 9 Delta, 12-Σ: "A name repeated is not a name shared. The archive would do well to remember that I am not the other one, whoever he turns out to be" (Memorandum 44, Spiral Stacks Registry).
The Provisional Framework
Kaelen's framework, submitted to the Concordance Committee in Year 709 and provisionally accepted the following winter, proposed a category of record — the parallax holding — for objects whose properties contradicted one another depending on the shelf from which they were described. A crystalline lattice, for instance, catalogued under mineralogy as face-centred and under liturgy as a reliquary, need not be arbitrated between the two entries. It could be recorded twice, in parallel registers, with each register sealed against the other and a third, empty register kept between them to absorb contradiction.
The empty register was Kaelen's innovation and his undoing. It was designated the residual slot and had no content, no accession number, and no permitted reader. Objections to the residual slot occupied four sessions of the Committee and two recensions of Concordance 18, the latter assisted by Elara of the Parallel Stacks, whose Lateralist apparatus had incorporated parallel registers some years earlier and whose opinion of Kaelen's version of the same idea was, in her own words, "warm, and limited to the weather" (Marginalia, Archive of Unseen Motions, Floor 47β).
The Kaelen Compromise
The Kaelen Compromise of Year 714 did not grant Kaelen his category. It granted him something narrower and, in the long run, more durable: permission for "auxiliary thematic indexes" at the archive level, allowing his system to continue as a parallel finding aid rather than as an official classification. The Committee's wording was careful. The finding aid was to remain "adjacent to, and not within, the authority of the primary catalogue" (Concordance 18, Clause 7, as recensed). Kaelen read the ruling aloud to his scribes twice and then, by all accounts, made a note and went back to work.
"We are permitted to be parallel. We are not permitted to be right. I have taken the second point under advisement."

Dispute with the Dusted Stacks
The sharpest opposition to Kaelen's programme came not from the Committee but from a colleague, Elara of the Dusted Stacks, who favoured a sigil-based system in which each object carried a single mark binding it to a single shelf, contradiction resolved by overwriting. Her position, set out in a tract of Year 716, was that a catalogue which said two things could not be said to have said anything. Kaelen's reply, delivered as a lecture on Floor 47β and preserved in three inconsistent transcripts, argued that a catalogue which said one thing was simply a catalogue that had lost the argument quietly. The two corresponded for nine years without either conceding a point, and their letters were eventually bound together and shelved, in accordance with the Compromise, as an auxiliary thematic index.
Later life and the Filing Controversy
From Year 718 Kaelen served as keeper of the Archive of Unseen Motions alongside Elara of the Parallel Stacks, an arrangement the Committee described as "efficient" and both parties described otherwise. His later years were consumed by the Kaelen Filing Controversy, a dispute over whether his own framework should be catalogued according to itself — that is, recorded in a parallel register sealed against the main entry — or recorded plainly, as an ordinary holding, by a system it did not recognise. Kaelen argued the first. The Committee, after two years, ruled the second. His framework is therefore filed under its own name in the main sequence, and the residual slot beside it remains empty.
Visitors consulting the Kaelen holdings on Floor 47β are asked to indicate at the desk which Kaelen they mean before descending, as the floor's stacks are arranged by parallel and the return path differs by register. The empty register may not be requested.
