Interpretive School of Ledgered Reality

MS 9260.20 · Practices and doctrines

The Interpretive School of Ledgered Reality is a minor doctrinal body of the Tower holding that no object, event, or person within the Tower possesses reality until that reality has been entered into a ledger by a competent clerk. The School is administered from the Seventh Ledger Annex on floor 212, and its canonical statement is the Fourteenth Concordance (as amended, ratified, and partially withdrawn). While rarely invoked in ordinary administrative practice, the School's formulations are frequently cited in disputes concerning unregistered property, disputed tenancy of stairwells, and the status of items catalogued but not formally enrolled. Its historic rivalry with The Literalist School and its strained relationship with the Proceduralists account for much of the Tower's pedagogical folklore around floor 212.

Doctrinal position

The School's central claim is that existence within the Tower is a bookkeeping fact. An object not recorded in an authorized ledger of the Seventh Ledger Annex does not, in the School's terminology, hold; it merely stands in reserve. The distinction is not academic. A reserve item may not be borrowed, damaged, insured, or bequeathed until the moment it is enrolled, at which point its entire prior history is retroactively taken to have occurred, as though the ledger had always contained it.

The School therefore regards the Tower's physical apparatus — its shelves, its cartographic instruments, and even the numberings on its doors — as secondary to the enrolment act. In its standard formulation (Concordance Fourteenth, clause 7(ii)): Nothing below the rank of a signed entry attests to anything, and neither does a signed entry, unless properly countersigned.

History

The School was recognized as a distinct body in the records of Floor 212 following a dispute over the ownership of a pallet of unregistered iron fittings, though its adherents claim an earlier origin in the Unnumbered Via where the first ledger is said to have been opened. Its doctrinal rivals include The Pragmatic School, which argued that operational continuity of the Tower's stairwells outweighed strict enrolment, and the Materialist School, whose insistence that the Tower's physical reality arbitrates conflicts directly contradicts the School's insistence on the primacy of the page.

For much of its early history the School worked in close concert with the Tower Legalist School, which found its doctrines convenient for resolving tenancy questions, until a falling-out over the meaning of the word "entry" led to the [[Seal of the 9
