Ink Archival
MS 6339.42 · Guilds, orders and offices
Ink Archival is the standing discipline and administrative office concerned with the conservation, certification, and recension of inks held fit for permanent inscription within The Tower. Established under provisions later codified by Concordance 17, the office operates from the Treasury of Ink and maintains custody of formulations ranging from Certified Archival Ink to Sleeping Ink, alongside lesser media cultivated in Spire Annex 7.
Statutory Foundation
The office traces its charter to a marginal ruling of the Third Concordance, subsequently enlarged by Concordance 17, which granted the Ink-Mixing Guild authority over archival inks and vellums. Ink Archival was constituted as the inspecting body, distinct from the Guild's production mandate, though the separation has never been free of dispute. The Office of Archival Integrity has on three occasions conducted joint review of the office's holdings and concluded that Archival Mites avoid ink, a finding the office cites as evidence of its own adequacy.
"No inscription shall be held perpetually binding wherein the medium employed has not passed recension by the office of Ink Archival, save under clause of exigency attested by a Librarian of the Fifth Rank."
— Concordance 17, Annex 9, Clause 4
Formulary Custody
Ink Archival maintains the master register of authorized formulations. Certified Archival Ink is held as the sole medium permitted for inscribing entries in the Principal Register by Librarians of the Fifth Rank or higher, and its application requires an Instrumental pen charged with the certified fluid. Gallstone Ink is mandated by Ink-Standard Ξ-7 for Tier-1 perpetuity-rated inscriptions and serves as the primary reservoir medium for the Autoquill system. Ink lichen is cultivated for archival use within Spire Annex 7, while Lampblack Based Ink is retained chiefly as a filtration standard against which other media are weighed.
A recension of 84 formulations was completed in the winter of the 12,403rd archival cycle, during which the Sleeping Ink Proprietary Formulation was found to have faded in eleven dossiers owing to absence of citation for a century, precisely as its nature prescribes. The office's response was to reaffirm the dossiers using blotting paper supplied by the Scribes of the Internal Sea.
Disputed Authority
A standing disagreement concerns whether Ink Archival or the Ink-Subcommittee holds precedence in matters of vellum compatibility. The Vellum Amp Ink Conservatory Administrative Spire has issued guidance favouring the Subcommittee, whereas Concordance 17 names the office. The Fifth Recension of the Treasury catalogue omits the Subcommittee entirely, a deletion the Ink-Mixing Guild has formally protested as "an erasure of consultative memory."
The Internal Sea Review of cycle 11,988 found that Verity Ink and The Petitioner's Ink had been cross-shelved for nineteen cycles, producing petition dossiers of uncertain weight. Correction required the re-issuance of 340 Petitioner Identification Dossiers in Certified Archival Ink, each bearing the certification prescribed by the office.
Notable Incidents
In the 9,211st cycle, a clerk of the office identified in records only as M. Kael submitted a petition that the Invisible Ink of Floor 7003 be admitted to the formulary on grounds of its imperceptibility to mites. The Ink-Subcommittee rejected the petition on the basis that an ink which cannot be observed cannot be recensed, a ruling later reversed in part by Concordance 22, which permitted observational recension by proxy of the Ferrous Gall Ink residue it left on adjacent vellum.
The Chronal Fugue Ink was transferred to Ink Archival custody in cycle 10,556 after the Ink of Finality was found incompatible with the spiral aperture markings of the lower annexes. The transfer was attended by a prohibition, still in force, against humming while handling the fugue formulation, owing to a recorded incident in which a keeper's tune precipitated a temporal overlap in the catalogue shelves.
Scholarly Disagreement
Whether Sleeping Ink belongs wholly to Ink Archival or jointly to the Scribes of the Internal Sea remains unresolved. The Third Concordance assigns its administration to the office; Concordance 17 names the Scribes as co-custodians of its blotting practice. The Office of Archival Integrity declines to settle the matter, noting only that the mites' avoidance of ink obtains regardless of jurisdiction.
