Ilene
MS 9773.41 · Persons
Ilene is the designation of a non-existent person permanently catalogued on Floor 712-Δ of the Tower, where she is recorded as the Author of the Lost Marginalia and the subject of the Ilene Controversy concerning whether a person who does not exist may be held in contempt of the Curatorial Council. Although no Librarian has ever observed Ilene directly, the Bureau of Vertical Cartography lists her as a stationary fixture of the floor, and her name appears in forty-one recensions of the Second Concordance as a party to disputes she did not attend.
Discovery and Early Catalogue Status
Ilene first enters the record in the Inventory of Absent Authors (Spire Year 338), compiled by the clerk Vassen of the Bureau of Vertical Cartography, who noted "a name without a body, filed between the Treatise on Unmade Beds and the Wayfinder's seasonal corrections." The Librarian of Floor 712-Δ at the time, one Domel, ratified the entry under Seal K, declaring Ilene "present in catalogue, absent in corridor." Subsequent expeditions to 712-Δ reported the marginalia attributed to her scratched into the plaster, though the Reading Lamp allotted to that section was never lit, as "an unperson requires no illumination" per the Sixth Concordance, Annex 2.
The Ilene Controversy
In Spire Year 401, the Curatorial Council issued a summons to Ilene to answer for the defacement of a concordance margin. Ilene did not appear. The Council then debated whether contempt could attach to a non-existent subject. The Second Concordance holds that "a name in the catalogue is a person before the Council" (Clause 9), while the Seventeenth Concordance states "only those who may be fetched may be fined" (Annex 11). The Librarian Soren recorded a minority opinion that "to summon Ilene is to catalogue the summons, not the woman," a view later struck from the recension during the The Litigation of the Misdelivered Oath.
"No lamp was lit, no oath was sworn, and yet the file grew three fingers thicker. We conclude the contempt is the Council's, not Ilene's."
— Soren, Marginal Note to Floor 712-Δ
The Lost Marginalia
The Lost Marginalia are sixty-three inscribed remarks attributed to Ilene, none of which reference any text held on Floor 712-Δ. The Bureau of Vertical Cartography reproduced twelve in the Atlas of Unattended Remarks (Spire Year 467). One reads: "the stair descends only where the reader believes it." The Luminous Chalk used for the original inscriptions was analysed by the Curatorial Council and found to be standard issue, though no chalk requisition for 712-Δ exists in the scriptorium ledgers.
Scholarly Disagreement on Existence
A long dispute divides the scriptoria as to Ilene's ontological status. The Oath of Silent Reading binds readers not to speak of her above a whisper, a rule the The Vanishing of Team Epsilon is frequently cited as having violated. The Sixth Concordance names her a "catalogue entity of class β," whereas the Seventeenth Concordance demotes her to "erratum." The Floor Ω annexes decline to list her at all, on the grounds that "Ω contains what is beneath number, not what is beside it." The The Isochrony Event of Spire Year 512 briefly rendered all mentions of Ilene simultaneous across floors, causing the Wayfinder to misfile three expeditions before the Reading Lamp on 712-Δ was accidentally lit and the effect ceased.
Administrative Note
Visitors to Floor 712-Δ are prohibited from writing in the margins of the Second Concordance regardless of whether Ilene is presumed present. The Bureau of Vertical Cartography advises that any name appearing in the plaster should be reported to the floor's Librarian and not answered aloud, as response constitutes acceptance of summons under the Curatorial Council's standing interpretation of Clause 9.
