Identification
MS 4829.50 · Practices and doctrines
Identification is the process by which the Librarians establish the categorical existence of a subject, enabling its subsequent cataloguing and spatial allocation within the Tower. The principle that an object or concept must first be identified as a legitimate subject of the archive before it can be assigned a location is the cornerstone of Tower metaphysics, as codified in the First Spire Delineation Protocols. The formal apparatus for this process is administered by the Office of Perpetual Affairs under its mandate for the stewardship of foundational conditions.
Procedural Framework
Identification is not an act of discovery but of declaration. A potential subject is presented to the Office via a Petition of Apparent Isness, filed in triplicate using forms available only from the Office's antechamber on Floor 14,307-A (the "Chamber of Unclaimed Verbs"). The petition must contain a provisional designation, a metaphysical signature (typically a resonant frequency or a stable paradox), and a sworn statement from a certified Epistemic Warrant Officer attesting to the subject's non-existence outside the Tower's referential frame. Upon receipt, the subject enters a state of Provisional Identifiability for a period not exceeding ninety-nine cycles of the central indexing lamp.
During this provisional period, the subject is subjected to a battery of concordant tests, primarily outlined in Annex γ of the First Spire Delineation Protocols. These include the Test of Unnecessary Particulars (to ensure it possesses at least three qualities irrelevant to its core nature), the Litmus of Latent Contradiction, and the most critical, the Verification of Vacancy, which confirms the subject occupies no conceptual space in any external, verifiable reality. Success in these tests leads to the issuance of a Certificate of Categorical Solitude, the document that formally births the subject into the Tower's administrative reality.
The Role of the Bureau of Apparent Duplication
Following certification, the case file is automatically forwarded to the Bureau of Apparent Duplication. The Bureau's mandate is to scour existing catalogues to confirm the identified subject is not, in fact, a previously catalogued subject presenting under a new designation—a common phenomenon known as "referential drift." This is a contentious phase, as the Bureau employs its own criteria for sameness, which often conflict with the identification criteria of the Office of Perpetual Affairs. A subject deemed "sufficiently similar" by the Bureau may be re-assigned to an existing holding, its Certificate of Categorical Solitude revoked and replaced with a Notice of Derivative Status. Disputes between the Office and the Bureau are adjudicated by the Guild of Legal Paradoxes, often resulting in the subject being placed in a state of Ambiguous Identifiability for decades.
Scholarly Disputes and the Problem of Pre-Identification
A major doctrinal schism concerns the ontological status of subjects prior to formal identification. The Declarative School, aligned with the Office of Perpetual Affairs, holds that a subject does not exist in any Tower-relevant sense until the Certificate is issued; any apparent traces of its influence in older records are considered archival phantoms or scribal errors. The rival Manifestational School, whose arguments are frequently cited by the Bureau of Historical Paradox, argues that potent subjects often "leak" into the Tower's ecosystem, causing effects that are later mistaken for paradoxes or ephemeral decay. They point to the work of the Department of Tattered Ephemera, which often stabilizes decaying concepts that bear an uncanny resemblance to later-identified subjects, as evidence of a pre-identification latent phase.
This debate is not academic, as it directly impacts the Cataloguing of Ephemera and the legitimacy of certain long-standing holdings. Concordance 712 supports the Declarative view, while the subsequently amended Clause 712-δ, introduced after the "Great Spectral Indexing" incident, provides a loophole for the Manifestational interpretation, creating a legal gray area actively exploited by research factions.
Identification and Spatial Allocation
Final identification triggers the spatial allocation process. The subject's metaphysical signature is cross-referenced against the Master Resonance Map held in the Spire of Unspoken Geometry. A compatible void—a floor, wing, or closet where the subject's non-existence will not destabilize neighboring holdings—is located. The assignment is formalized through a Writ of Placement, which is then physically nailed to the subject's designated door, shelf, or alcove by a Librarian of the Fifth Order or higher. It is at this moment of physical posting that the subject is considered fully integrated into the Tower's fabric and becomes legally real for all internal purposes. From this point forward, all interactions with the subject are governed by the standard Contradiction Protocol and relevant shelf-life ordinances.
Notable Exceptions and Anomalies
The identification process admits specific, narrowly defined exceptions. Certain classes of meta-subjects, such as procedures (including Identification itself) and regulatory bodies, are considered auto-identifying. Their existence is inferred from the administrative necessity they fulfill, a principle known as "Bureaucratic Immanence." Furthermore, subjects arising from confirmed historical paradoxes, as certified by the Bureau of Historical Paradox, follow an accelerated "retro-identification" pathway, where they are issued a certificate postdated to the moment of the paradox's original occurrence. The most perplexing anomalies are subjects that successfully complete identification but for whom no spatially coherent void can be found; these are granted a "Nomadic Identification" status and are permitted to drift between provisional locations, their files marked with the omega symbol and managed by the itinerant Scribes of the Erroneous Premise.
