Idealist or Catalogist Position
MS 2995.88 · Practices and doctrines
Idealist or Catalogist Position is a contested standing within the Librarian Order concerning the ontological precedence of catalogued subjects over their physical instantiations in the Tower. The Position arose from disputes between the Idealist Chapter and the Indexers Guild during the later decades of the Second Millennium, and was formalised, then immediately qualified, under Third Concordance, Amendment 22. It is maintained in the Attribute Ledger under Section 12, Spiral delta, though the relevant folios are noted as being in Administrative Stasis since Year 207.
Origins and Institutional Formation
The Idealist or Catalogist Position first appears in marginalia attributed to the Idealist Indexers, who held that a subject's entry in the Idealist Catalogue conferred reality upon its corresponding floor-object irrespective of material survey. This contrasted with the Realist Position, which required tactile verification by a certified Bureau of Relative Position clerk. The merger of the two offices under Third Concordance, Amendment 22 produced a procedural hybrid: the Catalogist component accepted the Idealist premise while retaining Guild methods of enumeration. First Archivist Vorrel, in the Idealist Primer, is recorded as observing that "the presence of things in the archive is the only presence the Tower is obliged to honour" — Idealist Primer, Folio 3, attributed to First Archivist Vorrel.
Doctrinal Content
The Position holds that an object elevated from provisional to perpetual under Idealist certification—as defined in the Idealist Catalogue—possesses a Docketed Vertical Position (DVP) even when no clerk has traversed the intervening stairs. The Foundational Surveys of Year 188 are cited by Catalogists as demonstrating that 41 un-threaded screws identified by form alone (per the Idealist Catalogue) were later found at floors not previously mapped. The Lanier Counter-Position rejects this, arguing that a screw unencountered is a screw unpositioned. The Gresh Position attempts mediation by proposing that vertical position is threaded retroactively upon first citation.
Disputes and Concordance Contradiction
Scholarly disagreement centres on whether the Position survived the dissolution of the Idealist Chapter in Year 204. Third Concordance, Amendment 22 states the arrangement "shall persist in amended form"; however, the later Concordance Reconciliation Appendix 9 voids "all standing derived from dissolved bodies save where recension is complete." The Unwritten Books annex holds that the Catalogist component was never written and therefore cannot be dissolved, a view the Bureau of Relative Position calls "geometrically idle."
"No bench is indeterminate by certification alone; the Position erreth only where the stair turns upon itself without notice."
— Indeterminate Benches, Ruling 14, attested by a senior member of the Idealist Chapter
Administrative Practice and the Winter of Year 209
In the winter of Year 209, a clerk of the Indexers Guild successor office—one Perril of the Ninth Spiral—refused to log a perpetual entry at Floor 884-Beta on the grounds that the floor's access stair was, per his measurement, a closet. The resulting grievance was docketed under Administrative Stasis and remains unsettled. Visiting clerks are prohibited from carrying open ledgers on the access stair to Floor 884-Beta, as the ledgers have been observed to close themselves.
Current Standing
The Idealist or Catalogist Position is recorded in the Attribute Ledger but is not taught in the lower scriptoria. The Idealist Catalogue's Catalogue of Temporary Exceptions lists 94 phenomena certified under 'Idealist Necessity', several of which are argued by Catalogists to imply the Position's continued force. The Lanier Counter-Position and the Gresh Position each claim the exceptions support their own rival readings. No expedition has been commissioned to resolve the matter, as all three offices assert the other two lack standing to request one.
