Hyper Coffee

MS 6969.83 · Practices and doctrines

Hyper Coffee is the designation given to a class of caffeinated preparations catalogued on floors Floor 1010 through 1010-B, the consumption of which is held to suspend the drinker's relation to the local progression of hours without, per Third Concordance, "effecting any departure from the floor presently occupied." The substance is maintained by the Medical and Metaphysical Annex under a standing recension last amended by the Eighth Concordance, and is the subject of continuing dispute between the Chronurgy Guild and the office of the Central Ascendancy.

Composition and Designation

Hyper Coffee is not a single brew but a family of forty-one recorded variants, each assigned a spiral marking from α to ω by the Chronal Fugue registrar of Sector Theta. Variant VI, contrary to the assertions of the Progressionalist School, is held by the Lateralist School to admit of no singular material form, a disagreement that the Eighth Concordance declines to settle on the ground that "the question pertains to a substance which does not exist outside the present article." The Master Chronometer is consulted before each decanting, and a reading below 0.4 sigma requires the preparation to be poured back into the Brass collector urn kept on Floor 1010.

A standard serving is recorded as 3.2 fluid ounces, measured by the annular cup prescribed in Concordant Law Appendix 12. The Chronurgy Guild maintains that the annular cup was first employed in the 114th recension of the Third Concordance, though the Central Ascendancy records its introduction under the Eighth Concordance some nine floors later in the descent.

Administration and the Annex

The Medical and Metaphysical Annex distributes Hyper Coffee through seven scriptoria, each supervised by a clerk of the fourth seal. The most recent inventory, taken on the winter of the long dusk, listed 1,204 sealed vessels and one open vessel whose contents were never accounted for after the Downshifting of Sector Theta. Clerk Oren Vell, assigned to the second scriptorium, filed a grievance in the year of the narrow aperture stating that "the Annex has counted the open vessel thirty times and drunk it zero," a complaint the Central Ascendancy answered by renumbering the vessel as a floor.

"No visitor may request Hyper Coffee more than once per present hour, and the present hour shall be determined without reference to the visitor's own account of it."

— Concordant Law, Clause 9, Annex 4

Scholarly Dispute

The Progressionalist School and the Lateralist School remain in fixed opposition on whether Hyper Coffee alters the drinker's position in the Tower's vertical order. The Third Concordance holds that "suspension of hours is suspension of ascent," a view the Lateralist School cites in support of its claim that the drinker remains where seated. The Eighth Concordance appears to contradict this by providing that "what is suspended may be descended upon resumption," a phrase the Chronurgy Guild interprets as authorizing limited Downshifting under the influence of Variant XI.

In the 209th recension, the Central Ascendancy ruled that the contradiction was not a contradiction but "a concordance awaiting its annex," and closed the matter to further petition. The Medical and Metaphysical Annex nonetheless continues to note, in each vessel's margin, the warning first inscribed by Elara Verner: "the hour returns; the floor does not decide for you."

Incidents of Record

During the Epsilon Surge of the recorded cold, a decanting error on Floor 1010 produced a batch of Variant XIX that the Master Chronometer refused to measure. The Chronurgy Guild attributed the refusal to an Epsilon Surge in the local aperture; the Medical and Metaphysical Annex attributed it to a clerk having used the wrong annular cup. The vessel was sealed under the Eighth Concordance and has not been opened, as opening it would require an hour that the Third Concordance denies having supplied.

A visiting clerk from Sector Theta who consumed Variant VI on three successive present hours was found by the Central Ascendancy to have committed no violation, as the hours in question were determined by the Annex and not by the visitor. The Lateralist School entered the ruling into its concordance of coincidences.

Present Status

Hyper Coffee remains in regular catalogue on Floor 1010 and is cited in nine active Concordances, two of which the Chronurgy Guild asserts have been silently amended by the Central Ascendancy. The Medical and Metaphysical Annex recommends that drinkers remain seated, a recommendation the Progressionalist School reads as a prohibition on ascent and the Lateralist School reads as a description of the only available fact.

Visitors are reminded that the annular cup is not to be removed from the scriptorium, and that doing so voids the recension under which the coffee was poured.
