Gallery of Receding Corners

MS 9190.50 · Practices and doctrines

Gallery of Receding Corners is a peripheral exhibition space occupying the western annex of Floor 11,415 in the North-West Spiral, in which all fourteen of its primary architectural corners withdraw from the observer at a measured rate of three centimetres per hour. The Gallery is maintained by the Custodial Order of Planar Stabilization and is one of the few receding spaces in the Tower whose recession is not merely permitted but scheduled.

Topography and measurement

The Gallery's dimensions cannot be stated absolutely and are therefore recorded as a rate. A corner approached at walking pace does not retreat faster; a corner approached at a crawl retreats at the same three centimetres; a corner abandoned entirely retreats regardless, a fact established in the winter of 4102 by Librarian Osmeret Vane, who left a plumb line on the annex floor and returned eleven days later to a gap of seven metres ninety-two. The rate has since been incorporated into the working definitions of the Receding Protocols at Annex 3-C.

Each corner carries a tracking number in the Register of Unfixed Angles, from RC-01 through RC-14, together with a description of its original altitude, its declared bearing on the day of registration, and the name of the clerk who last certified it. The Register is rebound every nine years because the earlier pages keep drifting apart in their bindings, though this is a stationery matter and not a receding one.

Administration

Curatorial authority rests with the Custodial Order, whose floor stewards inspect the annex twice daily and record the readings on a slate that is itself mounted at an unfixed point. The stewards' principal duty is to certify that no corner has exceeded its registered allowance; in practice no corner ever has, and the certification consists of a steward writing the word admissible fourteen times and signing once. The procedure is not popular. A grievance lodged in 4119 by Undersecretary Pell of the Western Annex observes that the word is written more often than it is believed, and proposes a single stamp. The proposal has been under review for some time.

The Gallery's earlier history is tangled with a related but distinct exhibition on Floor 7,114, whose own corners are administered under a different authority and a lower allowance. Traffic between the two is discouraged, not because of the corners but because of the paperwork.

The Aethelred succession

Aethelred of the Unseen Corners held the western annex from 4088 until his retirement, and his mode of retirement is now the Gallery's most frequently cited precedent. Rather than vacate the post, Aethelred entered RC-07 on the morning of 14 March 4111 and continued to recede within it, submitting three further quarterly reports before the distance made the correspondence difficult. His successor, Librarian Osmeret Vane, took the oaths at the annex threshold so that the Gallery remained, in the phrase of the investiture formula, "continuously occupied, however distantly." Vane's later measurement of RC-07 is the one on record.

Dispute over the allowance

The Gallery's rate has not gone unchallenged. The Seventh Helical Gallery has argued, citing Concordance 22-β, that any space receding at three centimetres per hour falls within its general competence, and that the Custodial Order's certification is therefore void of effect. The Custodial Order replies with Concordance 31-δ, which assigns all corners above Floor 11,000 to the Order without qualification. The two Concordances were promulgated in the same year and neither mentions the other.

"Where an allowance is granted and a rate observed, the allowance shall govern, and the observation shall be amended to it."

— Receding Protocols, Annex 3-C

The Receding Reference Desk declined to arbitrate, noting in its forty-seventh ruling — the Whispering Gallery Precedent — that a dispute between two competent offices is not a reference question. The matter was returned to the parties, who have returned it to each other annually since. The Crisis of the Receding Galleries absorbs most of the surviving correspondence.

Access and incidents

Visiting is unrestricted during the annex's posted hours. The Mist Vault Incident on Floor 7,114 is sometimes adduced as grounds for caution near receding spaces, though no comparable event has occurred on Floor 11,415, and the Gallery's own record of incidents is confined to a single entry: a reader of the Register of Unfixed Angles who attempted to certify RC-11 himself and was found to have certified a wall. The certification was struck, the reader's chalk confiscated, and the entry annotated in the steward's hand with the words not a corner.

Floor numbering in the North-West Spiral remains disputed, and readers seeking the Gallery are advised to confirm the floor before entering the annex, as the adjacent landing is numbered 11,414 and does not recede. The custodian at that landing will say so.
