Entry 7,408

MS 8422.59 · Documents and ordinances

Entry 7,408 is the catalogue designation for a suspended correspondence between the Office of Aperture Alignment and the Spiral Athenaeum, concerning a staircase that was alleged to have been filed before it was built. The entry has remained open since the 14th of Frostfall, 882, and is administered under the provisions of Ordinance 4 despite containing no subject object in the conventional sense.

Identification and Codification

Entry 7,408 follows the alphanumeric-sigilic format established by Entry 891-Sigma, though it lacks the Greek modifier common to paradoxical implements such as Entry 44Δ-742-881. The Identification field reads simply "7,408" and is cross-referenced within the Referential Catalogue under the heading "Pre-Constructed Ascents." The Ledger Entry for 7,408 records a stock weight of 0.4 quire, identical to that of a Preliminary Entry Slip, a coincidence noted by Archivist Meridian Holt in a marginal annotation to the Floor 8 record.

Per Resolution 12, the subject was to be filed twice: once as a structure and once as an intention. The second filing was reportedly performed by the Office of Aperture Alignment on the 9th of Deepwinter, 883, though the Ledger of Coherence, Entry 1 disputes whether a staircase catalogued twice can be the same staircase at all.

Provenance and the Point of Entry

The Point of Entry for the correspondence is recorded as Aperture 12-Beta on Floor 1,104, from which a Provenance Chain flows backward to a missing Location Slip. The chain terminates at a scriptorium whose seal has not been struck since the 7th Catalogue Convention. Clerks of the Spiral Athenaeum maintain that the staircase in question was described in a recension now held as Entry 413.99.001, a sub-entry of the Standing Catalogue.

"No ascent may be entered that has not yet declined to exist; the builder's intent is not a step."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4

The Second Concordance, by contrast, asserts in Clause 19 that "intention preceding stone is the oldest entry known to the Tower," a contradiction that has prevented closure of Entry 7,408 for three centuries.

Scholarly Dispute over Ontological Status

A long-standing disagreement concerns whether Entry 7,408 affirms or violates the Ontological Primacy of the Entry. The College of Reverse Indexing holds that the entry demonstrates a subject created by its own catalogue line, citing the self-referential precedent of Entry RIP-Ξ-909. The Office of Aperture Alignment rejects this, arguing that a staircase delayed is not a staircase negated.

In 901, a clerk named Vellum Sarto submitted a grievance to the Entry into the Master Log claiming that his name had been inscribed in Entry 7,408 without his ascent. The grievance was denied under Entry 440, Sub-clause 9, which states that "presence in a disputed folio constitutes presence in the Tower." Sarto thereafter refused to use stairs on Floors 1,100 through 1,109, a prohibition recorded without comment in the winter log.

Physical and Procedural Notes

The folio of Entry 7,408 is stored in a cedar press alongside the standard entry glass described in Entry 891-Sigma, which matches the dimensions of a Judgement Pane. The Recursive Vanishing Point Placement office has affixed a delta mark to the folio's lower margin, indicating that the staircase's terminus is to be determined by the entry itself, a clause appended by Archivist Meridian Holt to the relevant Floor 8 annotation.

Visitors to the storage press may not bring oil lamps exceeding 3 inches in height, as the cedar is prone to weeping under warmth.

Relation to Adjacent Entries

Entry 7,408 is frequently confused with Entry 1022, which concerns a ladder with no rungs but a complete inventory of absences. The Referential Catalogue distinguishes them by the sigilic rule that 7,408 admits of a future descent while 1022 admits of none. The subject of Entry 12,455 is described in a recension of Entry 891-Sigma as "the same thing twice," a phrase some clerks have attempted to apply to 7,408's dual filing, though the Ledger of Coherence, Entry 1 reserves that phrase for single staircases only.

No Alpha glyph has been affixed, as the conditions of The Final Entry have not been met; the correspondence remains, by consensus of no one, open.
