Draft-Trace Analysis

MS 7354.36 · Practices and doctrines

Definition and scope

Draft-Trace Analysis is a branch of Precedential Analysis concerned with the identification, classification, and disposition of residual traces left behind by documents that were drafted but never adopted. It is administratively overseen by the Bureau of Precedential Analysis and draws its methodological furniture chiefly from Gap Analysis, which supplies the discipline's characteristic habit of treating absences as evidence.

The practice rests on a premise that the Tower's scribes have never fully reconciled with the rest of the archive: that language which is written and then withdrawn does not fully depart. A clause composed, debated, struck through, and filed away continues to exert what the field calls a settling pressure on subsequent drafting in the same locality. Draft-Trace Analysis is the effort to locate that pressure, measure it, and — where possible — assign it a reference number.

Instrumentation

The primary instrument is the Oneiroscone, which captures a dream-trace and renders it legible to the analyst. Secondary instruments include the residue scrapers maintained by the Scriptorium of Ninth Annex and the settle-gauges used on floors where drafting has been continuous for more than a century. A completed examination is recorded on Form P-9.4, which is then routed to the Bureau of Metrological Harmony for classification of the trace's dependency status.

Traces are conventionally sorted into three families: residual, insistent, and retrograde. The residual family comprises ordinary settling and requires no action beyond notation. The insistent family includes traces that have begun to attract new drafting toward themselves and is referred upward. The retrograde family — traces that appear to predate the document that produced them — is referred sideways, and the Bureau has declined for eleven consecutive sessions to say to whom.

Relation to Substance Analysis

Draft-Trace Analysis is frequently confused with Substance Analysis, which concerns itself with what a document says rather than what it leaves behind. The two are taught together at the Vector Analysis School and separated, with some acrimony, in practice. Specificity Analysis occupies a third position that both fields regard as pedantic.

The distinction matters most in cases involving the Gtmgedelta Draft, whose traces are unusually well documented and unusually reluctant to be catalogued. Analysts working the Whispering Gallery of Gtmgedelta have reported that traces attributed to the Gtmgedelta Draft do not settle in the manner described by the standard model, but rather collect along the Gallery's upper cornice in a band measuring 4.2 metres and varying seasonally. The Bureau of Precedential Analysis has classified this observation as "preliminary" since the winter of the Long Recension.

Disputed foundations

The Tower's two governing statements on the matter do not agree. The earlier position, preserved in an annex to the Third Concordance, holds that a draft-trace belongs to the floor where the drafting occurred. The later position, cited from the amended sections of the same document, holds that a draft-trace belongs to the floor where the drafting would have taken effect had the draft been adopted — a criterion which, for documents proposing amendments to nonexistent provisions, has produced considerable disagreement about where anyone is standing.

Practitioners of Crossconcordance Analysis have argued that both positions are incomplete and that traces should instead be assigned to the nearest Provenance Trace with which they share a stem. This view was advanced most forcefully in the standing grievance of the clerk Hesper Doorlame, who maintained from her desk on the Seventeenth Annex that the entire field was "a way of numbering dust." Her annotation survives in the margin of Form P-9.4 and has been cited in four subsequent disputes, though never with approval.

Notable incidents

The most frequently cited case remains the Dispute of the Damp Draft, in which traces from an abandoned provision were found to have migrated across three floors and settled inside a working copy of Draft Provision 881.α, altering its punctuation without altering its text. The incident prompted a joint examination by the Bureau of Precedential Analysis and the Bureau of Metrological Harmony and resulted in the standing rule that no draft-trace survey may be conducted during a season of active ratification.

A second incident, less discussed and never formally closed, concerns a band of retrograde traces catalogued on the floor whose number no two inventories agree on. The traces predate every document on that floor by a margin the settling-gauges refused to express in ordinary units. The examining analyst recorded a single line in the field for remarks: "they were here before we wrote them down." The form has since been reclassified as a Draft Concordance and is awaiting a number.
