Chamber of Recantation refers both to the primary administrative body overseeing the formal revocation of catalogued entries and to the dedicated physical location, designated Floor Ξ-117, where such rites are conducted. It operates under the doctrinal authority of the Third Concordance (Annexes 4-7), though its practical procedures are largely dictated by the accumulated precedent of its own rulings.

Jurisdiction and Function

The Chamber's mandate is the execution of the Rite of Revision, the sole process by which an entry within the Tower's archives may be formally recanted. It does not initiate recantations; these must be petitioned for by a sponsoring Librarian of sufficient grade, or, in rare cases, by the Chamber of Deferred Judgement following a finding of "ontological fatigue." The Chamber's role is purely ceremonial and verificatory: it ensures the Rite adheres to all prescribed formalities, thereby transferring the evidential mass of the original entry to the recantation document, in accordance with the Doctrine of Recantive Inertia.

Physical Structure (Floor Ξ-117)

The Chamber is a circular, windowless vault approximately forty meters in diameter. Its walls are lined with interlocking lead plates, each inscribed with the full text of a historically significant recantation. The ambient temperature is maintained at a constant 13° Celsius, a standard set by Ordinance 712-B to minimize parchment degradation. At the chamber's center lies the Incinerator of Lapsed Potential, a bronze apparatus fueled by archival-grade Archival Dust. A single, fixed lectern, constructed of petrified oak from the Chamber of Unfinished Symphonies, faces the incinerator. The Rite of Revision

The procedure is meticulous. The petitioner, accompanied by a Conductor of Recantation, presents the original catalog card and the proposed text of revocation. A principal controversy concerns the final disposition of the recantation certificate. The Third Concordance (Annex 7, Clause 22) states it must be "filed with the antecedent entry's spectral index." However, the Seventh Concordance (Amendment Ω) argues the certificate becomes the new primary entry, rendering the original "a lacuna with gravitational properties." This has led to practical dilemmas in shelving, with some wings of the Tower maintaining parallel catalogs for recanted subjects.
