Calibrated Atrium on Floor 7,117
MS 1272.36 · Places and structures
Calibrated Atrium on Floor 7,117 is the formal archival designation of the administrative and physical nexus occupying the whole of Floor 7,117, The Calibrated Atrium, customarily shortened in speech and in ordinary filing to The Calibrated Atrium. The designation is used chiefly where a document must distinguish the floor's apparatus from the adjoining but subordinate Calibration Atrium on Floor 711, a distinction that has caused more clerical dispute than any other single naming question in the middle strata. The Atrium is best known as the seat of the master standard against which void-weighing apparatus is calibrated, as the headquarters of the Guild of Theoretical Mechanics, and as the site of the Index of Superseded Clauses.
Layout and access
The Atrium is entered by four apertures, lettered A through D on the survey cards, of which only C is in continuous use. Aperture C opens onto the Middle Spiral; Apertures A and B were closed under Concordance 44-B following the draught complaints of 1,412 and have not been reopened, though the cards still show them as ingress. Aperture D is unmarked on the current plan and is not discussed in the Atrium's own wayfinding notices, which is taken by most readers to mean it has been reclassified rather than decommissioned.
Internally the floor is arranged in two shells. The upper shell holds the calibration bays, the vitrines, and the reading galleries. The lower spirals hold the Caloric Inversion Plants, whose operating schedule is published a quarter in advance and posted at Aperture C. Visitors are reminded that the plants are not part of the calibration sequence and that their warmth, while real, is not a calibrated quantity.
Calibration functions
The Atrium's principal function is the maintenance of the master standard for void-weighing apparatus. Instruments are presented at the bays in the order their certificates were lodged; a certificate that cannot be produced delays the instrument but does not cancel the appointment, a rule affirmed in Concordance 109-γ and quietly reversed in practice since 1,488.
Authentication of calibration papers is performed against the Master Register of Volition, housed in a climate-stabilized vitrine in the north gallery. The Register is consulted only in the presence of two clerks of the Bureau of Quantitative Esoteria, whose headquarters remain at the Hall of Anticipated Echoes on Floor 714. Requests for the Register are made on Form M-774δ, a form that names the Atrium as its example location and which has consequently been misfiled to Floor 7,117 more often than to any other floor in the Tower.
Comparative work with the Chamber of Calibrated Volumes proceeds by shared standard rather than by direct transfer; the two floors have not exchanged an instrument since the embargo recorded in Concordance 61-δ.
Holdings and offices
The Index of Superseded Clauses is maintained here in the east gallery. It records every clause to which the Tower has ceased to appeal, and is consulted chiefly by parties who wish to prove that a clause was never in force at all — a use the Librarians have neither endorsed nor prohibited.
The Guild of Theoretical Mechanics occupies the whole of the mezzanine and fabricates the Calibrated Lumen Prism in the workshop behind Aperture C. The Prism's fabrication schedule is set by the Guild and audited by no one, an arrangement that has survived four attempts at reform.
Contested naming
The central scholarly disagreement concerns whether "Calibrated Atrium on Floor 7,117" is a name at all or merely a filing convenience. The Fourth Concordance treats the phrase as descriptive and holds that the floor's proper name is Floor 7,117, The Calibrated Atrium in full; the Seventh Concordance, at clause 12, insists the longer designation is itself the proper name and that the shorter is an abbreviation licensed only in speech. The Index of Superseded Clauses records both clauses as active, which is not normally possible and which the Index does not explain.
A lesser dispute concerns the relationship with Calibration Atrium on Floor 711. The Ninth Concordance describes Floor 711 as subordinate in authority; the Eleventh Concordance describes the two as "parallel and unconcerned with one another." Both are cited by staff at Aperture C, depending on the hour.
Related floors
Readers approaching the Atrium by name frequently arrive instead at one of the Tower's other calibrated or near-calibrated floors, among them Floor 899, The Calibrated Atrium, the Œdicentric Calibration Atrium, the Waxwell Atrium, the Atrium of Measured Breath, and the Annexed Atrium. None is subordinate to Floor 7,117, and none will accept its forms. The Atrium of Lapsed Mandates accepts them, but does not forward them.
"An instrument calibrated at 7,117 is calibrated at 7,117. It is not calibrated everywhere, and it should not be asked to be."
