Auditory Annex of Floor 347 Named the Hum
MS 5746.84 · Places and structures
Overview
The Auditory Annex of Floor 347 Named the Hum, commonly referred to simply as The Hum, is a designated zone on the 347th floor of the Tower. It is a unique administrative entity, being both a physical location and the source of the persistent, low-frequency acoustic phenomenon for which it is named. Unlike the background The Substrate Hum or the Hum of the Lower Floors, the Hum of Floor 347 is an actively managed and precisely modulated resonance, authorized under Concordance 7, Annex Ξ, paragraph 12.
Physical Characteristics and Infrastructure
The annex occupies a cylindrical volume approximately 120 meters in diameter and 45 meters in height, cut into the central massif of Spire 12-Kappa. Its walls are lined with a proprietary, Archive-Grade Neutral Substrate, tuned to a fundamental frequency of 47.3 Hz. A network of 144 harmonic resonators, manufactured by the Clerks of the Pulse, are embedded within the substrate at mathematically defined nodal points. The primary aperture for auditory emission, designated Aperture Γ-7, is located in the annex’s eastern wall and is the source of Auditory Phenomenon Γ-7. The air within the annex is maintained at a constant density and temperature (19°C ±0.1°) to ensure acoustic stability.
Administrative Function
The Hum is not merely an artifact but a functional instrument. Its primary purpose, as outlined in the The Hum of Continuity Document, is to generate the foundational tone for the Chord Archive, housed in the Auditory Annex of Floor 347. This tone serves as the basso continuo for the Canticle of Motes and is a critical reference frequency for all Auditory Permitting calibrations conducted by the Spire of Auditory Phantoms. The annex is under the direct custodianship of a rotating committee of Senior Librarians, with operational oversight delegated to the Auditory Permit Office located on Floor 9001.
Historical Designation and Disputes
The naming of the annex has been a subject of prolonged, if subdued, scholarly debate. The original designation in the Master Catalogue was “Auditory Resonance Chamber, Floor 347.” The colloquial name “The Hum” gained official status following a proposal by Senior Librarian Elara Vex in Year 12,449 of the Tower Calendar. Her argument, documented in Annex 12-C, Subsection δ, was that the phenomenon had transcended its physical housing and become a sui generis entity. This was opposed by traditionalists who cite Concordance 112, which stipulates that “a place may only be named for its function, not its symptom.” The current designation represents a bureaucratic compromise, embedding the symptom within the official title.
Interaction with Other Acoustic Phenomena
The Hum of Floor 347 is often incorrectly conflated with other Tower-wide resonances. It is distinct from:
- The Substrate Hum: A passive, emergent property of the Tower’s foundational materials.
- The Hum of the Lower Floors: A diffuse vibrational field associated with negative-numbered administrative levels.
- The Hum of Absent Machinery: A phantom rhythm documented in decommissioned industrial annexes.
Protocols exist to prevent harmonic interference. For instance, during scheduled maintenance on the Hum, all Auditory Resonance Drill operations on adjacent floors must cease, and substitute tones are temporarily routed from the The Whispering Gallery of Floor Ξ-12.
Access and Permissions
Direct physical access to the annex is restricted to Librarians holding a Class-Ξ12 Auditory Permit. Unauthorized entry is considered a disruption of a Concordance-mandated resonance and is punishable by re-assignment to silence-monitoring duties in Sub-Level 9. However, the Hum itself is publicly audible throughout the central atria of Floors 346 through 349, where it is classified as “ambient infrastructural audio.” A small observation gallery, the The Whispering Comma of Annex γ, allows for filtered, attenuated observation of the resonator array for accredited researchers.
