Atrium of Forgotten Climates
MS 9755.48 · Places and structures
The Atrium of Forgotten Climates is a nonadjacent vertical stack comprising twelve designated meteorological galleries, maintained on Floors Ξ-117 through Ξ-129. Its stated function, as per the Laminar Protocols codified in Concordance 9.1.3, is to serve as the primary reference repository for all atmospheric phenomena formally classified as lapsed, hypothetical, or procedurally discontinued. The atrium is most notable for its maintenance of several Forgotten Resin-sealed Chambers of Perpetual Weather, whose condition is overseen by the Senior Cultivator of Microclimates.
Architectural Configuration
The atrium’s core is a cylindrical void, 47.3 meters in diameter, piercing all twelve floors vertically. This central column is lined with the titular galleries, each accessed via a helical ramp of Iso 8812 construction. The structural integrity of the galleries is contingent upon the sustained application of Forgotten Resin to the interstitial seals, a task performed biannually by a Resin-Spreader of Pattern Theta. Each gallery is a self-contained environmental unit, isolated from its neighbors by double-layered glass treated with a solution of Forgotten Resin and powdered Aethelred's Silence to prevent cross-contamination of climatic memories.
The lighting system is a hybrid of residual phosphorescence from the Forgotten Resin seals and the active, muted glow of Violet Dusk, a notable Charged Stasis suspended in Gallery 7 (Ξ-123). Airflow and pressure are managed by a network of bellows and baffles originally documented during the Forgotten Expeditions, though their current operational schema diverges significantly from the original expedition logs.
Principal Holdings
The atrium’s collections are divided into three categories, as established in the addendum to the Forgotten Catalogue.
- Lapsed Climates: These are weather patterns that were once catalogued as active but have since been retired from general circulation. Notable holdings include the Perpetual Drizzle of the Seventh Unconcern (Gallery 2), the Stagnant High Pressure of the Marble Interval (Gallery 5), and a complete, if miniature, Forgotten Monsoon contained within a tessellated glass sphere in Gallery 9.
- Hypothetical Atmospheres: Climates derived from theoretical models or incomplete data. These include the Thermal Inversion Predicted by the Third Axiom (Gallery 4) and the Wind of Unfinished Conclusions (Gallery 11), which manifests only as a persistent rustling of unattributed parchment.
- Procedurally Discontinued Phenomena: Weather events whose maintenance protocols were formally rescinded. The most famous is the Charged Calm of Gallery 7, now stabilized as the Violet Dusk. Its original classification as a “climate of anticipatory violence” was struck from the records following the Schism of the Mutable Atrium.
Operational Protocols and Disputes
Governance of the atrium falls under the overlapping—and often contradictory—jurisdictions of the Librarians of Meteorology, the Curators of the Hypothetical, and the Keepers of Forgotten Resin. This has led to several ongoing scholarly disagreements.
A primary dispute centers on the definition of “forgotten.” The Meteorology faction, citing Clause Λ-7 of Concordance 9.1.3, argues a climate is forgotten only when its generating principle is absent from all active catalogues. The Curators of the Hypothetical contend that a climate becomes “forgotten” the moment it is placed behind a resin seal, a position informally supported by the resin’s documented property of ‘pure potential adhesion,’ which theoretically severs the phenomenon from causal chains. This disagreement directly impacts conservation efforts; for instance, the Senior Cultivator’s weekly adjustments to the Perpetual Drizzle are logged by Meteorology as “maintenance” but recorded by the Curators as “re-authoring.”
A secondary, more practical conflict involves the Œdicentric Calibration Atrium, which claims primacy in calibrating all atmospheric measurement devices used in the Tower. The Atrium of Forgotten Climates has repeatedly refused to submit its internal barometers and hygrometers for Œdicentric recalibration, arguing that the instruments have become symbiotically attuned to the unique, non-standard pressures of lapsed weather. This standoff is currently under review by the Vault of Perpetual Review.
Notable Incidents
The most significant breach occurred in 12--Λ, contemporaneous with the Forgotten Expeditions. A fissure in the seal of Gallery 8 (Ξ-124) allowed the Sirocco of Unanswered Inquiries to escape into the central column. The hot, dry wind circulated for 47 hours before being contained, during which time it desiccated several hundred linear meters of shelving in the adjacent Atrium of Lapsed Mandates and was implicated in the premature crystallization of a batch of Forgotten Resin pooled between Floors 207 and 208. The subsequent inquiry led to the mandating of the biannual Resin-Spreader inspections.
A quieter, ongoing incident is the gradual migration of the Wind of Unfinished Conclusions from Gallery 11 into the infrastructure of the helical ramp. Its presence is now detectable as a faint, papery susurration accompanying all foot traffic, which some junior librarians attribute to the Scent of Forgotten Paper becoming audibly manifest.
Relationship to Other Atria
The atrium is conceptually linked to several other specialized collections. It supplies reference climates to the Echovoid Atrium for acoustic testing, and its holdings of discontinued phenomena are often cross-referenced with the procedural archives of the Atrium of Lapsed Mandates. The methods developed here for sealing volatile atmospheres were later adapted for the containment of Forgotten Syllables in the Phonological Wing, owing to the noted chemical analogy between the resin’s physical adhesion and the syllables’ “adhesive silence.”
Its vertical alignment is nonstandard, creating pockets of “climatic bleed” in the interstitial floors, which are officially recorded as null spaces but are rumored to contain the offices of clerks who specialize in weather that was never formally named. The atrium remains, as per the final line of its founding charter, “a necessary monument to the atmosphere’s capacity for being overlooked.”
